To kick off this week’s episode of the I Love Limerick’s Podcast show we talked about the first story we covered which was Darkness into light. Now ilovelimerick has always been very vocal on Mental health and the services available in limerick. We have covered a lot of events such as Limerick mental health week 2019, The haven hub opening, Stand up for mental health protest and the newest event being Leona O’Callaghan, from the newly-established Haven Hub, launched the beginning of the Light into Darkness Lunchtime Talks. 

Another topic very close to all our hearts here in ilovelimerick is Limerick Pride. Ilovelimerick was actually created on Limerick Pride 10 years ago. This year’s pride was the biggest yet. Now ilovelimerick has also been a huge supporter to all the LQBTQ events that happen in Limerick, and 2019 was no different. This year we had to CALL IT OUT, a Campaign that Highlights the Harm caused by Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia in Ireland. Limerick Pride 2019 took place last Saturday, July 13 and was proved to be Limerick’s biggest Pride parade ever!

 Now 2019 has been a huge year for Climate change, With Limerick’s very own Saoirse Exton being the voice for all young people out there fighting for a climate change strategy. On Friday, May 24 Saoirse held Limerick’s Second Global Protest for Climate Action, as part of an International Strike, which gained a lot of attention and attracted a large following, including many students from Laurel Hill Secondary School. 

Now the Limerick community always supports its local community and this year was no different. This year Limerick came together to support Leon O’Connor, a 22-year-old Limerick animation student, who is pleading to the public to help him raise €70,000 to receive Stem Cell treatment in Russia, as one last hope to return to his life before Multiple Sclerosis took it over. There were loads of events set up to help raise funds for Leon’s stem cell treatment.

Not only did the Community support Leon, but Limerick has also come together again to Support Will Keohane. Transgender man, Will Keohane has reached out to the public for help in a bid to raise enough funds to go to Toronto for gender affirmation surgery. Will announced came out to family over 18 months ago and has been actively transitioning for the past year. 

The cost of top surgery in Canada, including flights, is over €10,000 so Will has set up a Go Fund Me page in the hopes you might be interested in helping his cause. As it currently stands €7,475.

 2019 was truly a winning year for Limerick with Greg O’Shea brought home another win for Limerick, by winning these years love island. Greg wasn’t the only winner this year.

Sinéad Flanagan, a 27-year-old Junior doctor in Cork has been named the 2019 Rose of Tralee, making her the third Limerick rose in sixty years to be awarded the prestigious title. Dr. Flanagan hopes to continue her work as a junior doctor while also carrying out her duties as the new Rose of Tralee 2019, as she hopes to one day specialize in infectious diseases. Sinead is an activist, with having previously volunteered in Ghana for a summer as a medical student. She also attended this year’s Darkness into Light and cut the ribbon at the event.
