‘EQUALITY, LOVE, DIVERSITY, CELEBRATION.’

The annual Limerick LGBTQ Pride festival is on its way with TEN days of ACTION for Equality, Love, Diversity and Celebration from August 30 to September 8. This year the festival is highlighting the Marriage Equality campaign and is urging LGBTQ people, their families, friends and supporters to wear pink to the parade on September 7. Limerick hopes to get the #PINKPARADE trending on twitter and to create national headlines as we unite to send a clear message of support for the freedom to love to the Government as they return to the Dail after the Summer break. As we go to press we are spurred into action to stand up against the encroaching homophobia in Russia and the global need for unity within the LGBTQ Pride movement and to say with a clear voice that there is no place for hate in Ireland. Limerick city is an accepting and open place with a wealth of amenities, but none so vital as its people. As a city we are united in our ability to come together for the greater good. More importantly we know how to throw a party!

Limerick Pride is a volunteer led, not for profit collective, working to promote positive visibility of LGBTQ people and their community in Limerick. Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transsexual Queer PRIDE is a global movement that celebrates Gay culture and history by creating an annual carnival atmosphere of events that revolve around a festival Parade. People are encouraged to be visible and express themselves to the wider community. Limerick Pride has been developing yearly since its beginnings in the early 2000’s. Each year the festival grows in scope attracting larger crowds to the city and various events.

From Friday August 30th – Sun September 8th and with ten days of events the annual Limerick Pride festival has something for everyone and every age group.

The highlight is of course the Parade which is set to bring hundreds to the city centre on September 7th. The #PINKPARADE is on course for becoming the biggest and most flamboyant yet! This is the last Parade of the Gay Pride season in Ireland and Limerick LGBTQ Pride is encouraging people to wear PINK to show support for MARRIAGE EQUALITY and an end to Homophobia. Expect full on colour, dance, music, street performance, theatrics and even a marching band! The Parade shall be led by our Grand Marshall, the very first Alternative Miss Limerick, Miss Lilette Shannon Banks!

Pride kicks off on Friday August 30th with the PRIDE Launch Party at The Parlour on Thomas Street from 8pm. Hosted by Madonna Lucia, and featuring the amazing DJ and dance troupe ‘Audio Angels’ who are putting on a spectacular show with fire breathing, dancing and complimentary cocktails to get everyone geared up for the festival. The Parlour shall be illuminated in Pink light to embrace this year’s theme for the #PINKPARADE for equality.

On the opening weekend of Pride there is a Pride Picnic taking place in the People’s Park with a dog show and all monies raised go to LAW. There are numerous events including the charity ‘Abseil’ of Thomond Park with monies raised going to ‘Belong To’, Marriage Equality and ‘Self Help for Africa’. On Sunday there is an interfaith Prayer Service in St.Marys Cathederal with music provided by Unity Gospel Choir Limerick, a drumming workshop in the Hunt Museum garden, and a very special performance of ‘BRB – The Play’ at the Parlour.

‘BRB’ has gained accolades both for its sterling cast and smash-hit run at the James Joyce Centre as part of the 10th International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival. “We’ve had tears from audiences in Dublin and Dungarvan. Not one performance has passed without at least one audience member telling us that they’ve been through what our characters went through; We need to open this dialogue and invite everyone in, and take away the embarrassment and awkwardness associated with talking about mental health,” says BRB Producer Kirsten Stoddard. Limerick Pride is delighted to partner with Pieta House and help raise awareness of mental health issues over the duration of the Pride festival and to encourage LGBTQ people to look out for one another. On Parade Day there will be a ‘Pride Grotto’ where you can get your picture taken with Drag Queens, Mr.Bear Ireland and many more and all monies raised go to Pieta House.

The Hunt Museum has a jam packed schedule of fun activities for Pride including Art from the Heart family workshop on Parade day where you can join a guest artist for a fun-filled afternoon making hearts with a twist and Community Love Flags. As part of the Hunt Museum 2013 Gathering programme, Dr John Logan will be speaking on researching family history and uncovering unusual family secrets at the Skeletons in the closet event on Friday September 6th at 1pmThis is an absolute must for genealogy buffs and may uncover more than a little queerness in family history. For more information see www.huntmuseum.com

The week builds towards Parade day with the Annual Mr. and Miss Gay Limerick pageant, Women’s Night and new to this year’s programme revered local hotspot Mickey Martins is busting out the sequins and fishnets for one night only on Friday September 6th for ‘Twas the Night Before Pride’ where Augustinian Lane will be transformed into a Burlesque Cabaret of delight with aerial acrobatics, cocktails and the best music by Mother Club Dublin.

The festival concludes with a choice of two clubbing venues on Saturday September 7th with newcomer ‘Fruit’ at the Basement venue, Catherine street with PRhomo Dublin and the Annual stalwart Pride Closing Party at Dolans warehouse. Dionysus club presents ‘Abbaesque’ with DJ Jules and Mona Lott over two floors as the entire venue turns into a haven for dancing Queens.

The legendary Céilí traditional Irish culture night at the George Boutique Hotel on Sunday September 8th at 7pm.

Written by Australian stage and screenwriter, Kirsten Stoddart, and directed by seasoned Irish theatre and film director, Jessie Kirby, BRB addresses issues that are often not discussed openly, such as teen depression, homophobia, bullying, self-image and suicide. BRB asks questions about identity and finding where you belong in society. BRB premiered at the 10th International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in May 2013, with a 6-night run at the James Joyce Centre. It is now working its way around the Republic of Ireland and the UK.
