A Limerick Pride vigil will take place in Arthurs Quay Park on Monday, April 18 at 6pm in memory of Sligo men Michael Snee and Aidan Moffitt, who were murdered in their homes this week.

The bodies of Micheal Snee, 58, and Aidan Moffitt, 42, were discovered in their homes in the quiet Sligo community just 48 hours from one another.

The horrific killings follow a series of unprovoked homophobic attacks on the LGBTQ community throughout the country in recent weeks.

Limerick Pride is calling on all members of the public to attend the vigil in Arthurs Quay Park, to show their solidarity and support for the LGBTQ community.

Those attending are asked to wear bright colours in ways such as flags, clothing, or paint to honour the memory of both Aidan and Michael.

During these troubling times, the people of Limerick are encouraged to show their support for the LGBT community in any way that they can.

Just last month, Limerick Pride along with Limerick Council came together to unveil a second rainbow crossing at Dooradoyle Road, next to Ballykeefe Roundabout to celebrate pride and diversity in Limerick. A rainbow crossing had previously been unveiled on Bridge Street in the city centre.

“For all those that questioned the need for this rainbow crossing initiative, then I suggest you take heed of the shocking events in Sligo and Dublin to members of the gay community.” Mayor of Limerick Cllr Daniel Butler said regarding the shocking attacks.

After suggestions that the two men could have met their attacker online, Gardai are urging people to take extra precautions when meeting up with someone they have met online.

Limerick Pride said of the tragic events, “Our thoughts are with the families of both Aidan and Michael, our community nationally and especially our LGBTQ friends in Sligo.”
