Silkscreen printmaking is LP’s most consistently popular course method while also being one of the most recognisable forms of printmaking there is.
The method produces really clean, punchy images with a strong graphic quality that understandably appeals
to a huge range of people who enjoy graphic design, typography, photography, printmaking and design. With silkscreen, details stay crisp and sharp while colour pops off the page!
Silkscreen lends itself to high volume production and both high contrast and layered multiple colour images, hence its suitability when creating posters, flyers, signage, text and line based imagery,
and striking layered colour prints of photographs. It’s a hugely versatile form of art.
In brief, the process itself involves transferring an image to a mesh screen. The treated image blocks out the negative space so that when ink is firmly pressed through the screen using a squeegee, only the desired areas are printed onto the paper/fabric.
LP’s five-week course will guide you through the entire process under the guidance of LP’s silkscreen tutor Derek O’ Sullivan. The weekly classes allow students to develop their work and ideas as they learn, and to make multiple prints throughout the duration of the course. Each participant will try each step in the process multiple times, ensuring greater retention of what has been learned.
This course will include:
- Image selection and preparation/colour separation using software
- Screen: Mesh sizes, screen selection and care
- The process of transferring images to screen using photosensitive emulsion and exposure unit
- Printing: Registration of image, ink & paper selection, printing technique, troubleshooting, creating multiple colour prints
- Studio health & safety/best practice

LP has devised a new introductory printmaking course that will allow participants to explore multiple forms of printmaking over four weeks. This course is ideal for those who would like to sample an overview of some of the main methods of printmaking without the financial investment of partaking in multiple courses.
The course is open to everyone, from those who have never made a print before to those who may be proficient in some forms of print but would like to try others. Classes will be varied and challenging with an emphasis on enjoyment and supported inclusive learning.
Each week, tutor Aine Finnegan will teach the basics of different methods of printmaking including:
- Monotype.
- Relief printmaking – linocuts & woodblocks.
- Letterpress – setting type and printing text.
- Intaglio printmaking – etching using both the drypoint method and copper etchings using soft/hard grounds.
The course is designed to increase the participant’s knowledge of printmaking across multiple mediums and to support the development of skills in these methods. LP offers more developed, follow-on courses in each form of printmaking for those that discover methods that they particularly enjoy.
LP limits course sizes to ensure one-on-one feedback and support and all materials
are provided as part of the course fee.
Aine Finnegan is a practicing printmaker who was jointly awarded the LP Printmaking Bursary in 2015, culminating in a joint solo exhibition.
Her work features in many private collections. She has featured in and organised several print projects with LP. She is currently undertaking an MA in Graphic Design in Dublin.

LP continues its range of intaglio courses with an enjoyable and ambitious course aimed at both complete beginners and those with those who wish to build on their existing skills in etching.
The term intaglio refers to the range of printmaking methods where the image is created by
drawing/etching lines/marks into the surface of a plate. When ink is applied to the plate and
then polished off, the remaining ink stays in the lines drawn onto the surface and they form the printed image. Materials used as printing plates include among others zinc, aluminium, acetate, and copper.
Etching on copper plates captures really fine line and detail and is perfect for those who would like to utilise their skills in sketching and draughtsmanship and create new artwork through printmaking.
The group will begin by working with small pieces of copper in order to become comfortable with the techniques before learning to create a larger two-plate copper etching. With full support from LP’s tutor Suzannah O’ Reilly, all participants will finish the course with multiple copies of their own prints.

Course Title: Collograph Printmaking and Etched Lino

Collagraph is a printing technique that is highly tactile, adaptable & one that both encourages and rewards experimentation. The collagraphic process relates to printing an image from a printing ‘plate’ made of cardboard or wood.
The plate is the base of your image before additional different surfaces materials, fibers and shapes are added. These can be layered up in order to create a detailed and textured printing plate that can then be varnished, inked up and printed using a printing press.
Substances such as sandpapers, textiles e.g. lace, bubble wrap, string or fine rope, cut card and textured wallpaper, acrylic texture mediums, carborundum, leaves, and grass can all be used to create the collagraph plate/image.
The use of etched lino is also incorporated in this course. Etched lino is made by applying a caustic soda based solution to the surface of a piece of lino. The solution etches into the lino, creating a range of interesting surface markings.
The variety of media and techniques included allows participants to make creative decisions in relation to every aspect of their work.
This course will include:
- Making/constructing your collagraph plate.
- Discussion & selection of various materials – provided by LP.
- Discussion & selection of various materials – additional materials can be brought by those taking part in the course if desired.
- Demo of how caustic solution is made and applied, completion of a piece of etched lino for each participant.
- Printing your plates: Safe use of presses, inking up, registration of your plate, troubleshooting etc.
- Studio health & safety/best practice
Suzannah O’ Reilly is a hugely prolific artist, printmaker and tutor. She is also co-founder and co-director of Parallel Editions, a fine art print editioning company based in Limerick city.
