The new year calls for new experiences & new skills! LP’s new Basics of Printmaking course has been designed to provide participants with a firm grounding in, and understanding of the main methods of printmaking
while also showcasing the exciting possibilities that exist within the art form. The course is designed for beginners or those seeking a general overview or refresh of the main methods that exist within printmaking.

Each week a new method is learned and each project is completed meaning every participant will complete the course with their own set of handmade prints made using a variety of techniques including relief, intaglio, monoprint, collagraph, and cyanotype.

Course sizes are strictly limited in order to ensure each participant has ample group & individual learning opportunities and the focus is centered on a fun and enjoyable learning experience in an inclusive
and welcoming environment.

Supported experimentation will be encouraged and participants will be shown both how to correctly use studio equipment & ways in which to adapt certain print methods so that they can continue making work at home. LP tutor Ultan McAvinue is an experienced printmaker, facilitator, and technician. He also sits on the board of directors of Limerick Printmakers.

Experiment with Monoprint

Sunday 23rd Feb

22nd/23rd Feb

10am – 5pm

Full Price €80
15% Discount €68

Studio Members Rate €60

This course is ideal for complete beginners to printmaking, artists seeking to use their existing skills in a new way,
printmakers seeking to experiment with a non-toxic, tactile process, & anyone who would like to try something fun and new that can then be continued at home with a few basic tools.

Monoprinting is a relatively simple printmaking technique that involves applying ink to the surface of a smooth plate to create images. With simplicity comes freedom! The beauty of monoprints is that the application of ink can result in many different effects & results & the process has a very painterly, experimental quality to it.

Unlike other forms of printmaking, each monoprint is entirely unique. During this engaging one day course, tutor Suzannah O’ Reilly will guide participants through several ink application techniques and will then show how combining them can create really special monoprints. The course will teach different monoprint techniques & styles including:

  • Additive – Drawing directly/ working into an inked surface using a range of tools to create different marks before printing.
  • Subtractive – Applying a sheet of paper over the inked plate and making marks on the back of the piece of paper The pressure will lift ink from the acrylic sheet to leave an image of what you have drawn on your paper.
  • Painting with Ink – Directly onto a clean plate before printing of over another printed background.
  • Stencils – Allow for certain areas to remain clear or to be filled in with other colors/ mark-making.
  • Textured monoprints – Incorporating the use of textured surfaces such as papers, feathers, etc. into your prints.

Each participant can experiment with a combination of techniques and will finish the course with a range of their own handmade prints. Use of all tools and materials are included in the course fee and we encourage participants to bring any collages/ sketches/ ideas that they may like to work from. Suzannah O’ Reilly is a hugely prolific artist, printmaker, and tutor. She is also co-founder and co-director of Parallel Editions, a fine art print editioning company based in Limerick city.

Safe Etch & Collograph

Sun 1st March

For the purpose of this course, LP combines two very different print methods that can be adapted for home use. Many people these days are understandably wary of etching with harmful chemicals. Learn the basics of safe etching and how to make your own fast-acting, a non-toxic solution at home during LP’s one-day course that is open to all levels- from beginners to advanced.

Participants will then print their etched, tonal aluminum plain emboss (with no ink), relief, & intaglio & learn how these can deliver different effects. Collograph is a printing technique that is highly tactile & adaptable & can provide a great contrast to the entirely different process of etching. The calligraphic process involves making a ‘plate’ from cardboard or thin wood. The plate is the base of your image before loads of different surface materials, fibers and shapes are added. These can be layered up in order to create a detailed and textured palate that is varnished, inked up and printed.

Substances such as sandpapers, textiles e.g. lace, bubble wrap, string or fine rope, cut card and textured wallpaper, acrylic texture mediums, carborundum, leaves, and grass can all be used to create the collagraph plate– it’s a really tactile and imaginative form of printmaking.

During this course, each participant will:

  • Make their own collagraph plate using various materials
    – provided by LP but others can be brought by participants if they desire.
  • View a detailed demo & learn how the non-toxic caustic solution
is made and applied, & use this solution to make one or more etchings.
  • Learn how to correctly print their plates: Safe use of presses,
inking up, registration of your plate, troubleshooting, etc.

Intro to Photo etching

LP’s ‘Intro to Photo Etching’ is an enjoyable day-long course that will teach participants the steps involved in reproducing their own photographs (or drawings/computer-generated images) as handmade, individually colored prints. No previous printmaking experience is necessary.

The desired photo is exposed onto a light-sensitive plate which, after developing is then ready to print from.
This plate can then be inked up in a variety of ways using a range of colors to produce a range of imagery using one  plate. The benefits of this exciting method are that the image on the plate remains photo realistic with high levels of detail while also giving course participants the opportunity to reproduce their image in a number of different ways/color schemes.

This can provide an entirely new way of looking at or working with existing photographs or imagery. Correct linking up and wiping off the plate, registration, paper types, and trouble-shooting while printing will also be addressed on the course. This technique can enrich the work of artists, printmakers, film students, photographers & anyone with an interest in experimentation, particularly in photography.

LP’s one-day ‘Intro to Photo Etching’ would also appeal to those interested in presenting existing family or historical photographs in a creative new way. Participants will work in A5 – A4 size. Suzannah O’ Reilly is an accomplished artist, printmaker, and educator who has exhibited broadly both nationally & internationally.

Intaglio: Multi- Plate Copper Etching with Aquatint

25th/26th April

10 am – 4 pm

Full Price €160
15% Discount €136

Studio Members Rate €120

This intensive weekend course is aimed at anyone who may have a basic understanding of etching and would like to develop their knowledge while also incorporating tonal shading through the aquatint technique.

Intaglio printmaking refers to when marks are made on the surface of a plate & it is these marks, lines, etc. that will retain ink. These etched lines fill with ink & form the image when printed.

Aquatint involves the application of a powdered resin that results in the addition of various tones to an existing line etching. Aquatint in built up in layers to allow for a range of darker and lighted tonal areas within one print.

Participants will be shown how best to apply ground to their plates, how to transfer their design, mark making on their plate, and registration and printing of the plate before learning about the aquatint process and completing the steps involved with the technique- stopping out a design, graduations of bite and its effects on an image,
corrections and proofing the plate, and registration and printing of both plates.

Use of all tools and materials are included in the course fee. Suzannah O’ Reilly is a hugely prolific artist, printmaker, and tutor. She is also co-founder and co-director of Parallel Editions, a fine art print editioning company based in Limerick city.
