An event organised by the Limerick Anti-Racism Network on Saturday, August 10, saw people from all walks of life come together to celebrate Limerick’s diverse community with the message, “Limerick Says Welcome”.

The sun poured on Limerick City as music, art, and different cultures could be heard and seen along the banks of the Shannon in Limerick City as a large group of people came together for a family-friendly celebration of the city’s people.

“Like a lot of other Limerick people, I’m here today to say, Limerick says welcome,” John Lannon, Doras CEO told I Love Limerick, adding, “The city has been enriched over the years by people from all over the world who have come to work, to study. We’ve also had people who have escaped from wars, from persecution, who have made Limerick their home.”

Doras, founded in 2000, is a non-governmental organisation working to promote and protect the rights of refugees and migrants.

Limerick Anti-Racism Network, made up of a network of groups with the aim of helping overcome all forms of discrimination, described the event as a “beautiful day of solidarity” saying it is the city’s diversity that “makes us”.

“Over the years, so many people who have come to Limerick from different places through different routes have contributed,” Mr Lannon said, continuing, “They’ve become lawyers. They’ve set up businesses. They’re working in our restaurants. They’re working in the health sector and Limerick could not work without people from all over the world right now.”

The Doras CEO highlighted the event’s purpose as a celebration of multiculturalism with a message that Limerick is a welcoming environment to people from all over the globe.

John concluded, “We’re along the banks of the river on a fine day and it’s so wonderful to see the joy and the friendliness and the interaction between so many people here today.”
