Division 4 of the Allianz National Football League winners and Tailteann Cup finalist Limerick Senior Football team honoured with Civic Reception

The heroic Limerick Senior Football Team have received a Civic Reception to honour their outstanding achievements during the 2025 season.

The reception recognised the team’s success in winning Division 4 of the Allianz National Football League and reaching the Final of the Tailteann Cup, a season that has reignited excitement and optimism for Limerick football.

Limerick Senior Football Manager, Jimmy Lee, welcomed the recognition of the team, saying, “The players were looking forward to this reception, it’s a wonderful acknowledgement of what this team has achieved this year, and you can see that pride in them.”

The Mayor of Limerick, John Moran and Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery, hosted the Civic Reception at the Council Chamber in Dooradoyle to honour the team; among the attendees were Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, and other members of the Oireachtas from Limerick.

The progress of the footballers this year has reminded everyone of the strength, passion, and potential that exists right across the GAA community in Limerick, with Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery saying their success had given the sport a “real lift”.

Speaking at the reception, Mayor John Moran praised the footballers for their perseverance and pride, and looked with confidence to what lies ahead, saying they showed “remarkable resilience and belief”.

He said, “Your performances this season have inspired supporters across Limerick and demonstrated what can be achieved with unity and determination. I’ve no doubt this is only the beginning of what this group will accomplish in the years ahead.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery congratulated the players and management for representing Limerick with distinction, “You’ve brought a real lift to Limerick football. For years, you’ve kept working, kept believing, and this year’s success is the reward for that persistence. You’ve captured the imagination of Limerick supporters and shown that our football story is one of courage and renewal.”

Director General, Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly commended the team’s role in strengthening Limerick’s broader sporting identity with a “depth of sporting talent, dedication, and community pride that define Limerick”.

He said, “The Council is delighted to recognise them with this Civic Reception and we look forward to supporting them on the next stage of their journey.”

Manager, Jimmy Lee said, “It’s always extremely important that you are achieving your goals, the three times in Croke Park this season was special. We started the year with a clear goal: to elevate Limerick football, and I believe we’ve made real progress toward that ambition.”

Limerick Senior Football Captain, Cillian Fahy, said it was a ‘massive honour’ to be recognised at the Civic Reception and also thanked Limerick supporters, saying, “It’s really heartening to see the support that we have throughout the county. The friends and family are always there, but to see the circle widening and the Limerick public getting behind us, it was an exciting time, probably the best time in my career so far. So, a massive thanks to everyone who got behind us during the summer.”

The Civic Reception is one of the highest honours conferred by Limerick City and County Council, celebrating those who bring distinction to Limerick through excellence, commitment, and pride in place.
