Limerick Sings Festival brings a magical evening of choral music to St Mary’s Cathedral for the June Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday 31st May. It will be part of a wider programme of events provided by the Association of Irish Choirs Conference with whom the Festival is collaborating this year. The AOIC conference will see up to 300 choristers from Ireland and the US descending on the city for a week end of workshops, expert talks, concerts and choral delight.

The atmospheric setting of St. Mary’s Cathedral forms the perfect backdrop for the concert which opens with the Lassus Scholars from Dublin, renowned for their spectacular performances of sacred music.  These will be complimented by guest artist Noirin Ni Riain, acclaimed for her interpretations of chant and Irish music.

Lively Jazz ensembles of young singers from the University of Minnesota, participating in the conference, balance the programme followed by award winning Clermont Chorale from Dundalk who will perform traditional and modern pieces. The concert will close with Limerick’s Unity Gospel Choir under the direction of the indomitable Gretta McCormack O’Shea, concluding on a rousing note with a selection of their repertoire.

Limerick has a rich tapestry of choral music tradition with established choirs such as Limerick Choral Union celebrating 50 years, and new choirs emerging all the time as more and more people discover the sense of well-being they get from singing and the joy music can bring to their lives. The Association of Irish Choirs, based at University Concert Hall is certainly adding to Limerick’s reputation for choral events with a fine conference programme  while UCH and St Mary’s provide superb venues for choral performance.

The Limerick Sings Festival is set to grow in 2015. Organised by a collaborative group representing the hotels, music interests and the University Concert Hall, Limerick Sings will build on its success for next year.  Ronan Branigan of the Savoy Hotel and Chair of the Limerick Sings Committee says that following a busy year of promotion for 2015, there is great interest from the US and UK choirs in coming to Ireland for next year’s event. Sinead Hope, the new General Manager at UCH, also reports an increase in inquiries from travelling choirs and orchestras for 2015 and beyond.
