The Limerick St Patrick’s Festival 2020 is greener than usual with ‘Our Future is Green’ theme.

The theme of this year’s Limerick St Patricks Festival 2020 has been announced as ‘Our Future is Green’. Limerick’s businesses, community, sporting, and voluntary groups are being asked to showcase their green credentials as part of this year’s Limerick St Patrick’s Festival.

Limerick’s St Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest in the country, with thousands of participants from at home and further afield.

The Limerick City and County Council are asking parade participants to embrace the parade theme when preparing their St. Patrick’s Day Parade entry. They are asking them to be as creative and imaginative as possible in interpreting the theme Our Future Is Green, through costumes, floats and performance.

Entries can be created by using green alternatives and/ or recycled materials where possible.

They want parade participants to tell us what their Green Action for 2020 is. This could be greener transport initiatives, switching to greener energy in their hub or clubhouse, or it could be a project they are planning to undertake during the year.

They are also asking participants to consider where possible greener alternative modes of transport when arranging to get to and from the parade, this could include car-pooling, cycling, walking or taking public transport.

They want to explore this important topic in imaginative and engaging ways and to remind people that our climate is a very fragile thing and to celebrate Limerick’s designation as a European Green Leaf City for 2020. They are asking you, the people of Limerick to be ambassadors for Limerick’s European Green Leaf Year.

The European Green Leaf Award is a competition aimed at cities and towns across Europe, with populations between 20,000 and 100,000 inhabitants. The award recognises commitment to better environmental outcomes, with a particular focus on efforts to generate green growth and new jobs. Limerick has been awarded the Green Leaf designation for 2020.

Cllr Micheal Sheahan, Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, said: “Limerick always comes alive during the Limerick St Patrick’s Festival and this year is no different. By embracing the green theme, participants will be able to celebrate our National Day and be conscious of a very important issue at the same time. I am calling on all those in businesses organisations and sports clubs to use their imaginations and come up with some creative and informative entries for this year’s parade.”

Aoife Potter-Cogan, responsible for Festivals and Events with Limerick City and County Council, said: “This year’s Limerick St. Patrick’s Festival theme turns Green. We don’t just mean green shamrocks but all things environmental. We are asking the people of Limerick to be ambassadors for Limerick’s European Green Leaf Year. It is an important year for Limerick, one where we think about our environmental future and want to explore what this means to us, the people of Limerick, in imaginative and engaging ways.”

Limerick St. Patrick’s Festival 2020 is managed by event management company, Grooveyard on behalf of Limerick City and County Council and is supported by Fáilte Ireland.
