The Limerick Tipperary Samaritans seek volunteers

The well-known mental health and suicide prevention group, The Samaritans are seeking for new volunteers to join their ever-expanding team. Limerick Tipperary Samaritans.

The Limerick-Tipperary organization, one of the 13 branches in the country, has been in operation for over 40 years currently, has 150 dedicated volunteers. Limerick Tipperary Samaritans.

The Samaritans are looking for eager, committed and charitable locals are who willing to attend the city’s call centre and candidates who can cover night shifts are particularly sought after. Limerick Tipperary Samaritans.

Successful candidates will undergo six weeks of informative training before they commence their duty as a Samaritan. Limerick Tipperary Samaritans.

Last year, The Samaritans received more than 70,000 calls from people who needed their help and statistics showed that one in six calls are related to suicide, according to The Samaritans.

The Limerick and Tipperary Samaritans provide emotional support around the clock for anyone experiencing feelings of distress or despair. They provide a safe space to talk about how you are feeling. As volunteers, we’re ordinary people, and they keep all conversations private.

As well as being available to talk on the phone at any time, visitors are also welcome to the Centre on Barrington St. in Limerick 365 days a year. You don’t need an appointment and the service is completely free of charge.

As well as answering telephone calls, emails and texts, and spending time with people who call in, the volunteers are also engaged with the community outside the branch. Their outreach work includes working with schools, the local prison, and other organizations to help people in distress and to make sure that people are aware of our service.

Most recently, the Samaritans have embarked on two new ventures; an outreach programme at Limerick Prison, and a peer outreach project at the University of Limerick.
