Proposed Limerick to Shannon Airport rail link gathering steam

A €30 billion investment following the approval of the All Island Strategic Rail Review brings the proposed Limerick to Shannon Airport rail link one step closer

Shannon Airport has received funding of over €6.3 million in Government support under the COVID-19 Regional State Airports Programme 2021.
Limerick TD Brian Leddin noted the proposal to build a railway connection between Limerick and Shannon Airport “is particularly exciting”

The proposed rail link between Limerick and Shannon Airport has gotten a boost following approval of the All Island Strategic Rail Review (SRR) by Cabinet ministers in Government where the SRR outlines a €30 billion rail investment strategy for the next two decades.

The SSR sets out plans for the future development of the railway system across the island of Ireland to 2050 and other enhancements as part of the project have already begun in Limerick, including completing the Limerick to Foynes freight railway which has the possibility of developing a concept for local passenger services between Foynes and Limerick City.

Deputy Brian Leddin TD emphasised the importance of the possible project for Limerick and the Mid-West region saying there were “many elements to the plan which will be very positive for Limerick”.

The Green Party TD noted, “The proposal to build a railway connection between Limerick and Shannon Airport is particularly exciting. It will be a game-changer for the whole Midwest.”

Irish Rail CEO, Jim Meade told Clare FM the national rail provider is “looking at improving the services” on the Western Rail Corridor which includes Limerick, Galway, and Clare, he noted that a rail link between Shannon and Shannon Airport as well as improving other links will “provide a stronger counterbalance to Dublin”.

Deputy Leddin noted getting the project listed on the SRR was part of the challenge and said without representation “the project could be put on the long finger”.

He said, “Unless there are clear and coordinated calls from politicians, citizens, business and industry representatives, and all other stakeholders in the region, then the project could be put on the long finger. It is a very deliverable project, but we all must make it a priority to ensure funding is secured from central government and planning begins as soon as possible.”

Modifications at Limerick Junction to facilitate direct services between Limerick and Cork are also among the projects in the SRR. Additionally, it aims to improve capacity and line speeds between Limerick and Limerick Junction, and increase services between Limerick and Galway, Limerick and Cork, and Limerick and Ballybrophy.
