Limerick Traveller Network celebrated the official launch of its first-ever strategic plan, showing “when Travellers and services come together, real change is possible”

The Limerick Traveller Network aims to give Travellers a voice and to build up the capacity to work towards improving accommodation, education, mental health, and discrimination.

Limerick Traveller Network (LTN) celebrated a key milestone this week with the launch of the Strategic Plan 2026 – 2030, the first-ever strategic plan launched by the group.

The launch of the strategic plan highlights LTN’s hopes to create a more collaborative and stronger working relationship with local authorities, service providers, volunteer agencies, and within the local communities.

The Limerick Traveller Network aims to give Travellers a voice and to build up the capacity to work towards improving accommodation, education, mental health, and discrimination. A group of over thirty traveller women from many areas around Limerick created this network in 2019 to represent the traveller community under the guidance of Margaret O Brien and Olive O’Reilly.

The Strategic Plan 2026 – 2030 was developed through extensive consultations with Traveller families and local stakeholders. The plan acts as a five-year roadmap focusing on urgent issues identified by the community in Limerick, such as accommodation, mental health, education, discrimination, and family supports.

Speaking at the launch, Oliver O’Reilly explained that the Strategic Plan 2026 – 2030 “comes directly from travellers”, acknowledging the presence of Mayor John Moran at the event she said, “Having Mayor Moran launch it in the Council offices means a great deal to us.”

She added, “It shows that agencies and services are starting to understand Traveller issues more clearly, and we are hopeful that this is the beginning of a better working relationship with Limerick City and County Council. When Travellers and services come together, real change is possible.”

Following the launch of the plan, Minceirs Whiden, Ireland’s only all Traveller forum established in 2004, shared on social media, “LTN was established by Olive O’Reilly and Margaret O’Brien in 2019, two great role models within our community. LTN represents nearly all the Travellers within Limerick City and are working enthusiastically and tirelessly, communicating with our community to give the Traveller community a united voice.

“The Strategic Plan 2026 – 2030, developed through extensive consultations with Traveller families and local stakeholders, sets out a five-year roadmap that focuses on the most urgent issues identified by the community in Limerick, for example: Accommodation, Mental health, Education, Family supports and Discrimination. Since 2019, when the group of women got together and established LTN, they have become a positive influence and a very proactive driving force for Traveller-led community change, delivering initiatives directly to our community.”
