King John’s Castle, Limerick was a hive of activity on the evening of Wednesday, July 13 as Shannon Heritage in association with Pentathlon Ireland hosted the Opening Ceremony of the Limerick UIPM Youth A World Championships which took place on the University grounds from July 14 – 18.

This Pentathlon event welcomed over 100 national and international participants to the city and showcased a host of physical, mental and intellectual disciplines including Swimming, Running, Shooting and Fencing throughout its duration.

The Opening Ceremony, which took place in King John’s Castle on Wednesday, July 13, was not only a celebration for the participants of the championships but also an event for the whole city to enjoy with lots of activity and entertainment for young and old alike.

The event commenced with a parade of colours as World Champion Piper, Captain Michael Egan, lead the participants, adorned in their national costume and supporting their national flags, from the castle undercroft to the Castle courtyard.

The Castle courtyard then hosted an eclectic mix of live music & dance from the infamous Bunratty performers and King John’s Castle resident entertainers; sport and activity including Irelands tallest mobile walking wall, archery and water zorbing with Get West Adventure, Falconry displays courtesy of Adare Outdoor Pursuits, Mexican Garden dining experience with thanks to local Limerick company, Mexican Food Dudes and vintage fashion and finery supplied by the glamorous crew at Absolutely Fab Les who hosted a vintage fair as part of the celebration.

Commenting on this event, Ivan Tuohy, General Manager of King John’s Castle, said “We are delighted to host this prestigious event in the grounds of King John’s Castle and look forward to a great evening showcasing the best of what our magnificent city has to offer both locals and our international visitors alike”.

With fire breathers, live entertainment, great food, storytelling, medieval combat displays, extreme adventure activities, the opportunity to experience King John’s Castle at dusk, not to mention a magnificent celebratory atmosphere, this was the perfect evening out for all ages in the heart of the city.
