Limerick women’s network presents Representing Women’s mission is to empower and support community-based women who experience disadvantage and marginalization as a result of barriers to participation and lack of opportunities.

Representing Women allows women to learn more about community, political systems, and structures before they commit to public representative roles. Representing Women is a free part-time program and open to all women across Limerick City and County.

Representing Women widely recognized the main barriers women face when attempting to get into politics and public representation include the 5 C’s – Confidence, Childcare, Cash, Candidate Selection, and Culture. In response to some of these barriers NCCWN-Limerick Women’s Network has developed a specific program.

The different modules covered in the program include Personal development, Communication strategies, Understanding Community and Council structures, Environmental impacts affecting women and Sustainable development goals.

The National Collective of Community Based Women’s Networks (NCCWN) was established as a national organization in 2002. The rationale for the organization was to enable women to experience disadvantage, to network and have a voice in national policy developments. This consolidated many years of informal feminist networking and information sharing in the women’s community sector, dating back to the 1990s.

Representing Women program will run weekly on Tuesdays from 10 am -1 pm for 16 weeks.

This networking arose from a shared concern to address women’s poverty, the marginalization, and exclusion of women, and the need for a gender perspective in community development. Working from a feminist perspective and social inclusion ethos, equality is consistent as the central goal of the NCCWN in recognition that women’s inequality is further compounded for disadvantaged women.

The mission is to empower and support community-based women who experience and marginalization as a result of barriers to participation and lack of opportunities. This will be achieved by our women’s projects bringing about positive and sustainable changes to their lives and society using collective action and feminist approaches, with an emphasis on policy and challenging structures, attitudes and behaviors that marginalize women.

In its role as the women’s local development company, the NCCWN and its seventeen member organisations have formed an alliance and are working collectively to have a positive impact on the community women’s sector while delivering on the goals and objectives of the Local Community Development Programme; providing collective analysis, collective action and collective outcomes.
