The official launch of The Limerick Womens Mini Marathon 2015 took place in the Strand Hotel. Having started in 1998 the event is in its eighteenth year and is set to be bigger and better than ever on Sunday October 25.

The event has been hosted by Limerick Athletic Club since it first began when just over 300 athletes took part.

Participant Laura Ryan welcomed everyone to the launch and complemented the growth of the event since it began, she said: “It is fantastic that today there are more than 3000 people expected to take part and publicity has played a huge role in getting people involved with the Limerick Leader and Limerick’s Live 95fm promoting this event for the next six weeks.”

Alan English, Editor of The Limerick Leader who are sponsors of the marathon was present and said: “We are very proud and delighted with our association with the event and we have very happy memories of the event in the past. It is a great event it raises a lot of money for very good causes around and there is a fantastic feel good factor on the day when you are out there.”

John Cleary from Focus Events explained how the separation of the longer and shorter marathons really means that everyone can take part both walking and running: “This event is in its eighteenth year, there are few events that last this amount of time and it is a great privilege to be associated with it and to work with Limerick Athletics Club. This year there is a number of changes, we have introduced a medal so what we are saying is that everyone is a winner and we think the medal will help people to remember their achievement on the day and mark their achievement over time. We have introduced two different distances this year we have a 5km and a 10km race and that is because of feedback from people whereby some thought 8km was too long and some thought that it wasn’t long enough. Crossing the finish line is a personal achievement and no matter what the distance it is to be applauded”

John added: “The University of Limerick have been fantastic supporters of this event. This is a Limerick event and any event that is successful in Limerick is generally successful because of the people involved with it and we hope that is what happens again this year.”

This event is synonymous with charities from all over the Midwest for fundraising. Many of the women will run, walk or jog to raise much needed funds for their respective charities.

This event attracts participants from all over the mid west region with some marathon and athletic enthusiasts travelling from further afield.
