Limerick Womens Network podcast series launch to mark International Women’s Day

On Monday, March 8th, International Women’s Day, Limerick Women’s Network will launch a brand-new podcast series titled Unmasked: Shades of Women During COVID-19. Limerick Women’s Network podcast

The podcast journey started in July 2020 when Limerick Women’s Network joined with Creative Writing Specialist, Sheila Quealey, to facilitate women’s exploration and writing about their experiences during Covid. This process took place over five months, meeting each week for two hours on Zoom. The sessions resulted in raw, honest, and inspiring stories told by courageous women who were willing to impart them to the big wide world. The reports cover serious and real-life issues such as addiction, domestic violence, self-harm, and suicide. Limerick Women’s Network podcast

Creative Writing Specialist, Sheila Quealey, said, “I have heard these stories repeatedly during the process of preparing them for the podcast. Each time I listen, I cry at a certain sentence, a moment of fragility, an act of resolution or an admission of fear or shame or weakness. I imagine the women who will listen to these stories and find their voices. I imagine that there are women who will find comfort from someone else telling a story that is their story too.”

Limerick Women’s Network Coordinator Edel Geraghty continued, “I think that what has been produced is a vital piece of work. It provides a snapshot of the reality of women’s lives in COVID. It also speaks to the value of women coming together in groups and creating spaces of trust and safety to explore their experiences.”

As well as sharing their stories, the podcast also includes the women sharing what it was like to work together and write their very own story. The launch of Unmasked: Shades of Women During COVID-19 will consist of a live reading of some of the stories and a panel discussion with the authors, Sheila Quealey and Edel Geraghty of the Limerick Women’s Network.

This event takes place on Monday, March 8th, at 7 pm. People can register for a ticket via Eventbrite. More information can be found on the Limerick Women’s Network Facebook page. The project was funded by the Community Foundation Ireland and the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board.
