Limerick Youth Service Bakery Project

Teenagers from Limerick Youth Service were the big winners at a major baking competition held in the United Kingdom recently as they left with the eight trophies! 

The young people, who are trainees with Limerick Youth Service Bakery Project, were in the UK for the Alliance of Bakery Students & Trainees (ABST) Annual Conference which was held in the English resort of Alton Tower.

Trainee Roxana Szabo won first prize for her ‘Chess Set’ in the 3D Dough Art Display with her colleague Edgar Dergacevs winning taking first place in the Granary Display section of the Rank Hovis Cup.

In the highly competitive Devon Rose Bowl, Emma Cunningham just pipped Colm Cantillon to first prize while Conor Cantillon was highly commended by the judges in the same competition.

Emma and Colm also enjoyed success in the British Society of Baking Trophy where they finished also finished second and third respectively.

There was also success for LYS in the President’s Cup with Shane Boylan finishing third in what was a highly competitive field.

‘Simply unbelievable’ were the words of Limerick Youth Service baking instructor Paul O’Brien as he reflected on what was an historic and very successful weekend.

‘The trainees should be extremely proud as they represented their families, friends, country and themselves with pride,’ said Mr. O’Brien.

‘They went above and beyond in preparing for this tournament and deserve all the success they get,’ added a very proud Mr. O’Brien who thanked his colleagues for all their support.

Away from the competitions the trainees attended several lectures and baking demonstrations by senior professionals from the baking and bread making industry.

Limerick Youth Service would like to congratulate the entire Bakery Team on what was an outstanding achievement at this year’s ABST Conference.

Supported by Limerick Clare Educational Training Board, Limerick Youth Service Bakery Project is a two year City and Guilds accredited programme that offers trainees a Diploma in Proficiency in Baking Industry Skills.
