Limerick Youth Service Community Training Centre (CTC) is providing the foundation for young learners to enter the working world through its QQI Level 4 Retail Skills course which provides experience and opens doors to a world of opportunities.

Ash, a young learner from the QQI Level 4 Limerick Youth Service Retail Skills course, has been gaining practical and academic experience through the course provided by Limerick Youth Service with Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board.

Ash said, “The QQI Level 4 Retail Skills Course is a one-year programme that helps young people like me get ready for the world of work, especially in the retail industry. However, the skills learned in this course can also be used in many other types of jobs, as it is a great foundation for progressing onto further education and training at Level five, which I will be doing after I leave here.”

Learners benefit from studying a mix of general workplace skills and more specialised subjects, and Ash believes the overall course experience has allowed her to gain an insight into the aspects of the working world which interest her.

She said, “Throughout this course, I have learned a mix of general work skills and more specific subjects such as workplace health and safety, team working and information skills. This has helped me discover what I am good at and what interests me, and has prepared me for future jobs and further education. Many learners who’ve completed this course have gone on to work in hospitals, offices, and call centres.”

For Ash, the next step is a QQI Level 5 course, but the path forward is flexible and full of promise with many graduates going on to continue their education and others entering the working world, Ash said, “Others have continued their studies in places like Mulgrave Street Campus, and later went on to study at TUS. Some have studied hospitality, and one student even went on to study engineering. This was a great inspiration to me to work hard and get my major award, and I am looking forward to continuing my studies at Level Five.”

“The Limerick Youth Service Retail Skills course gave me a wide range of skills and opened many different paths for my future, which is fantastic,” Ash added.
