There was talent aplenty at Limerick Youth Service’s Variety Show as over 20 participants from across the city and county showcased the best of our Limerick’s youth culture. In front of a packed house at LIT’s Millennium Theatre the near 300 in attendance were treated to a variety of singing and dance acts, a very unique fashion show and a short film about youth work. Commenting on the event, which is growing in popularity, Dermot Troy of LYS said he was delighted with the success and standard of performances. ‘The quality and imagination of the performers gets better by the year,’ said Mr. Troy adding that it was a great opportunity for young people to express themselves and a platform for them to celebrate their youth.’ This year there were five categories, performance, music, dance, song and band. The judging panel of Aoife McLoughlin, Voice of Ireland fame, Dara Fahy of Limerick’s Live 95FM and yours truly were faced with the unenviable task of choosing the winners-and it wasn’t easy! In the song category success went to Sarah Meade from Foynes, a group called Chase from Kilmallock won the band category and the talented 15 year old Leah Melling from Corbally took the accolades in the music category with a touching rendition of her original song ‘Saviour’.  A thrilling night’s entertainment was rounded off with a hilarious fashion show that saw St.Johns Youth Club in Garryowen take home the prize. The audience was also treated to a special short film that highlighted what youth work means to young people, volunteers and Limerick Youth Service’s dedicated team.
