A Limerick Youth Theatre Transition Year students project

An open call is being issued to schools in the city and county to enable Transition Year students to apply to take part in the Transition Year Film (TYF) project.

LYT is proposing to create a small company comprising students from schools across Limerick who will create and deliver a short film.

The participants will be trained in areas relevant to their interest, including Design, Management and Performance, before producing a short film to be premiered in front of friends, family member and the public at 69 O’Connell Street in March 2016. Auditions will take place in February after which rehearsals and filming will begin.

Announcing the (TYF) project, LYT Artistic Director Angie Smalis said: “Every year LYT receives applications and calls from Transition Year students seeking work experience with a theatre company and while the youth theatre is committed to supporting young adults in their journey towards a career in the performing arts, the student’s applications often arrive at an inopportune time for a placement.”

“With this in mind,” she added, “the Youth Theatre is proposing a new work experience model that offers young adults direct and supported experience in the business and art of theatre making. Professional Arts practitioners such as artists, technicians and managers also will be involved in the delivery of the programme.”

Set up in 1997 and supported by the Limerick Arts Office,  LYT is a company of young performers, dancers, writers, designers, directors, producers and filmmakers.  LYT holds weekly workshops with artists and directors from October to May, and presents a full-length production in August after 5 weeks intensive rehearsals. Besides summer production, LYT produces shows throughout the year, participates in festivals and collaborates with groups across Limerick.
