A Limerick trio are preparing to embark on a gruelling 700km cycling challenge in support of Limerick Suicide Watch, hoping to raise vital funds for the volunteer organisation that provides life-saving assistance to people in crisis.

Limerick’s Alan Gill, together with friends Sam and David, will leave Limerick on Friday, July 17, 2026, bound for Larne in what they describe as the toughest physical challenge they have ever undertaken.

The three cyclists have spent recent weeks training for the journey while sharing their preparations online to raise awareness of their fundraiser and the work of Limerick Suicide Watch.

Speaking ahead of the challenge, Alan said supporting the charity was the driving force behind taking on the demanding cycle.

“This is a charity that means a lot to us, and we couldn’t have more admiration for the incredible work they do in our community, helping and supporting people when they need it most,” he said.

While the journey will test their endurance over hundreds of kilometres, Alan admitted that cycling is relatively new territory for him.

“This challenge will arguably be the most physically demanding thing we’ve ever done. In fact, it was probably my first time riding a bike since school when we cycled to Lahinch last weekend,” he joked.

The lads will cycle from Limerick along the west coast to Donegal, across the north of Ireland past the Giant’s Causeway, and then down to Larne. This is a demanding multiday ride through some of Ireland’s toughest coastal terrain. Despite the scale of the challenge, the group say they are determined to complete the journey and raise as much money as possible for the charity.

Every donation made through their GoFundMe campaign will go directly to Limerick Suicide Watch, with the trio urging anyone who can to contribute.

They are also asking members of the public to help spread the word by sharing their fundraising page across social media.

“Even if you’re not in a position to donate, a like, share or comment can go a long way in helping us reach more people and raise awareness for this amazing charity,” Alan said.

“We’re incredibly grateful for all the support we’ve received so far and we’re looking forward to sharing our journey over the coming weeks. Limerick Suicide Watch provides vital, on the ground support for people in Limerick experiencing mental health crises. Their volunteers patrol the River Shannon, offer reassurance at critical moments, and connect individuals with the support they need. Their work is quiet, consistent, and genuinely life saving.”

The challenge has already attracted support from Alan’s club, Shelbourne AFC.

In a message posted on social media, the club said: “One of our Junior A players, Alan Gill, is setting off on an incredible 700km cycle on 17th July to raise much needed funds for Limerick Suicide Watch.

“Everyone here at the club would like to wish Alan, Sam and David the very best of luck on their journey. We know they’ll make us proud.

“Every donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated. Best of luck, lads!”

Limerick Suicide Watch is a voluntary organisation dedicated to suicide prevention, providing patrols in vulnerable areas of the city and offering support to people experiencing mental health crises. Operated entirely by volunteers, the charity relies heavily on public donations to continue delivering its vital services to the community.
