LIT Free Maths Revision Seminars for Leaving Cert Students ahead of State Exams

Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) is once again offering free maths revision seminars to leaving cert students ahead of their state examination this June.

The popular seminars, which are in the form of workshops, are aimed at helping leaving cert students to reach their full potential in this core STEM subject which is key to many career opportunities in the midwest.

LIT President, Professor Vincent Cunnane attributed the popularity of these workshops to the students’ understanding of the variety of career opportunities available in the Mid West Region to graduates with STEM qualifications.

“Graduates in these disciplines help to drive innovation and enterprise and have played a significant part in the growth in our economy, particularly in this region. We at LIT maintain that these subjects open up students to a range of exciting careers, and believe every student should have the best possible chance to excel in these subjects if they so wish,” he said.

“To this end, we are providing free maths workshops in our Moylish Campus again this year to assist students as they prepare for their leaving cert exams in Mathematics.”

The two-hour Mathematics workshops will focus on a particular strand of the Leaving Certificate curriculum and will run at a pace dictated by the students.

LIT’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering lecturers Alan Sheahan and Owen McGrath, will conduct the free workshops over two evenings – Tuesday, May 14 and Wednesday, May 15, 2019 – from 7 pm to 9 pm.

The first workshop will focus on Strand 5 Section 2 (Calculus) from the Higher Level Maths curriculum. After a brief introduction to the concept of differentiation, the learner will revise differentiation of core functions such as polynomial, exponential, trigonometric and logarithms as well as the derivatives of sums, differences, products, quotients and compositions of functions. The student will then go on to apply differentiation to determine rates of change, maxima and minima. If time permits, students will revise integration of core functions and use integration to find the average value of a function over a given interval.

The second workshop will concentrate on ordinary level mathematics and focus on Strand 4 (Algebra). This workshop will revise as many algebraic techniques as time permits such as addition/subtraction/multiplication/division of algebraic expressions including algebraic fractions. Transposition of formulae, solving linear equations/inequalities in context, factorise expressions of order two, simultaneous equations (two linear or one linear one of order two). If time permits, the learner will revise addition/subtraction/multiplication/division of complex numbers.

Pre-booking is essential for both workshops, as places are limited. Further information and booking details are available at www.lit.ie/revision
