Former Limerick hurling captain and current Kerry Senior Hurling Manager Ciarán Carey was among the speakers at a sports coaching and development educational seminar held in the Millennium Theatre at Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) on Friday, 15 September.
More than 350 students, teachers and coaches from schools throughout Limerick attended the annual event, the theme of which was ‘Looking After Your Mental And Physical Health’.
The seminar was aimed at 16-19 year olds and was being jointly hosted by Limerick Sports Partnership (LSP), the Mid West Regional Drug & Alcohol Forum and LIT.
Speakers on the day included Ciarán Carey, as well as Claire Fahey of Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health; and Caolan O’Donnell, UL Student Welfare Officer.
“The primary purpose of this conference was to highlight the importance of collaborative approaches when dealing with substance misuse and sport and related factors such as mental health issues,” commented Liam Cantwell, Youth Sports Development Officer, Limerick Sports Partnership.
He continued, “The seminar brought into sharp focus the issue of mental health and the requirement of every member of society, particularly younger people, to reach out to those who require support in their darkest hour and to seek support should they be suffering from depression.”
“Events such as this promote an increased understanding of the importance of good mental and physical health and how we respond to it as a much wider issue in Irish society,” added Mr. Cantwell.
