Local Sports Plan Development moves to next phase in Limerick

Limerick City and County Council and Limerick Sports Partnership announce the next stage in the development of Limerick’s first Local Sports Plan

Following a strong response to the recent surveys and stakeholder engagement, Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) and Limerick Sports Partnership (LSP) are now sharing the findings from our consultations with residents and stakeholders about sport and physical activity in Limerick.

The groups say they aim to “shape the vision” of increasing sport and physical activity participation across the city and county.

LCCC and LSP are inviting members of the public to attend upcoming public consultation workshops which take place in designated workshops from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in Desmond Complex, Gortboy, Newcastle West, on Wednesday, September 3; Citizen Innovation Hub, Sarsfield Street, Limerick City, on Thursday, September 4; Adare Community Hall, on Wednesday, September 10; and Kilmallock Library, Millmount, Kilmallock, on Thursday, September 11.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who participated in the surveys and shared their insights. Your contributions are helping to shape a more inclusive, active, and healthier Limerick.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, said the groups have been “driving on new sports facility delivery” while reopening closed facilities, including the Akeaton Swimming Pool.

He said, “The strong engagement we’ve seen so far is also a clear reflection of the pride and passion people across Limerick have for sport and physical activity. To deliver a More Healthy Limerick, we are trying to create an environment where mental wellbeing, preventative health and active lifestyles are supported through smarter local policies and greater accountability. This Local Sports Plan closely aligns with that vision and I’d encourage all that haven’t yet made their views heard to do so.”

Director General at Limerick City and County Council, Dr. Pat Daly, looks forward to these county-wide workshops “These workshops are an important step in shaping a Local Sports Plan that truly reflects the aspirations of our communities, and I encourage everyone to get involved and have their say. By participating, people are helping to create a more inclusive, active, and healthier Limerick for everyone.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr. Catherine Slattery added, “I strongly encourage all members of the community—regardless of age, background, or ability—to get involved and have their say. Together, we can build a plan that supports wellbeing and celebrates the power of sport to bring people together.”

Phelim Macken, Coordinator of Limerick Sports Partnership, said, “We’ve been really encouraged by the level of engagement so far. It’s clear that people across Limerick are passionate about sport and physical activity. These workshops are a great opportunity to build on that momentum and ensure the Local Sports Plan reflects the needs and ambitions of our communities.”
