Outstanding achievements of local sports teams honoured at Mayoral Reception

The Mayoral Reception is the first of two sports-themed Mayoral Receptions this January highlighting the dedication and talent of the local sports teams

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, hosted a memorable Mayoral Reception at Istabraq Hall, Merchants Quay, celebrating the outstanding achievements of local sports teams who represented Limerick at the highest levels in the summer of 2024.

The event, the first of two sports-themed Mayoral Receptions this January, highlighted the dedication and talent of the athletes.

A range of sporting codes were represented, reflecting the diverse athletic talent within Limerick. From traditional sports like camogie and golf to adaptive sports like wheelchair hurling, and international competitions in rowing and polocrosse, the honourees exemplify the broad spectrum of physical activities that contribute to Limerick’s vibrant sports culture.  

The Honourees were Limerick Under 16 Camogie Team: Winners of the 2024 Munster and All-Ireland U16 Camogie Championships; Munster Wheelchair Hurling Camogie Team: Champions of the 2024 All-Ireland Wheelchair Hurling Camogie Championship; and Limerick Representatives with Rowing Ireland: Recognised for their stellar performances at the 2024 Home International and Coupe de la Jeunesse Rowing Championships.

Also honoured were Diane Moore and Sophie Quirke: Representatives of Ireland in the 2024 U16 Polocrosse Tour to England; Members of Castletroy Golf Club: Celebrated for their success in the Irish Men’s Senior Cup in August 2024; and Team Ireland Special Olympics Representatives: Brian Lowe, Andy Coyne, Emma Griffin, and Tara Loftus, for their achievements at the Princess Charlene Invitational in Monaco.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran expressed his admiration for the recipients, stating, “The teams we honoured this evening have shown exceptional dedication, skill, and sportsmanship with great success during the summer of 2024. They are true role models for both young and old, inspiring us all with their achievements. Their success not only brings pride to Limerick but also aligns with our vision of a more healthy Limerick, promoting physical activity, teamwork, and community spirit.

“The diversity represented at this Mayoral Reception underscores the inclusive and supportive environment that Limerick fosters for athletes of all abilities and interests.”

A Mayoral Reception honouring individuals who set high bars in sport in 2024 will take place on January 29th.

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
