On Saturday, 18 September, Lough Gur junior cyclists were invited to test out the newly upgraded Ash Point Trail within the grounds of Lough Gur Lakeshore Park. They were greeted and welcomed by Lough Gur Storyteller John Carew who set the scene before the bikers set off on their way. The new trail was funded to the tune of €20,000 under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme and match funded by Limerick City and County Council and local area Councillors. The trail directly links to the Lough Gur shared road space and ultimately will link Holycross to the SlÍ Na Sláinte all the way to Bruff as part of major plans junction upgrade and pathway work commencing later this year.

The Lough Gur Junior Cycle Limerick Bike Week event was planned to include the youngest of cyclists as we all know that the joy and love of cycling is most often ignited at a very young age. When the more mature cyclists to Lough Gur were asked what attracted them to life long cycling, they regularly say it reminds them of their carefree youth and brings back memories of extended time in the great outdoors. Many studies have proven that core interests are deeply developed during the formative years, ranging in general from the earliest age to 12.

As part of Lough Gur’s educational and activity programmes we embrace and encourage cycling to Lough Gur wherever possible. Lough Gur has boom in cyclist numbers over the past year due to high quality on offer from the new Kiosk and of course the recently upgraded public toilets ensures that Lough Gur as a cycling destination ticks all the boxes for our abundance of friends making their way to us on two wheels. Manager of Lough Gur Kate Harrold commented “Offering quality cycling destinations is important for Limerick. In particular offering young cyclists, a safe place to bring their bikes will, it is hoped, encourage them to continue cycling throughout their life for fitness and environmental benefits. Taking part in the Limerick Bike Week event is our way of committing to welcoming cyclists of all ages”

On the day BraySlo Director Jean Tierney launched her new messy play activities offering. Children attending the Lough Gur Bike Week event were welcome to get back to basics and play, paint and explore in the great outdoors. After the event young cyclists are invited after their excursion to enjoy the new Lough Gur Solstice Park Playground, Tricky Tree Trail and Lough Gur Fairy Trail. As part of this Limerick Bike Week event all participants received complimentary refreshments sponsored by Limerick Bike Week 2021 to mark the grand opening of the newly upgraded Ash Point Trail. Supporter of this project Cllr. Brigid Teefy commented, “this is yet another excellent improvement for all visitors to Lough Gur. The trail not only offers a safe cycling path for junior cyclists but also make the pathway more appealing to all ages for walking”.
