Lough Gur interactive online tour displays a rich archaeological heritage

The new Lough Gur interactive online tour includes a 360 degree interactive tour of Lough Gur along with a 27 minute video tour with Lough Gur tour guides Tom Tierney, Siobhan Kirby, George Finch, Aine Barry and John Carew.
After the official launch of the Lough Gur interactive online tour, Ken Moore, Head of Property from the OPW, Noreen Finnegan from the Heritage Services and Heritage Attractions for the OPW, Rose Cleary, Author of ‘The Archaeology of Lough Gur, Kate Harrold, Manager for Lough Gur and Sarah McCutcheon, Limerick City and County Council Archaeologist visited the sites to highlight to the Office of Public Works the excellent work they were already doing in taking care of monuments in Lough Gur and potential to look at additional sites that would benefit from their expertise.
Lough Gur, Limerick’s Lake District, is at the heart of a remarkable archaeological landscape featuring sites that represent every major period of human history in Ireland. Physical evidence of occupation from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Early Christian, Medieval, Early Modern and Modern eras has been found in the immediate vicinity.

It is home to Ireland’s largest and oldest stone circle. At one point in time it was also home to the largest concentration of Giant Irish Deer in Europe. Lough Gur has breathtaking scenery along with a fairy trail and tree trail for younger and young at heart visitors. The new Lakeshore Park Kiosk Kiosk is also open since September 2020.
The Visitor Centre at Lough Gur displays the rich heritage of Lough Gur through interactive multimedia exhibitions that bring to life over 6,000 years of archaeology and history. Fully trained and qualified guides are also on hand to answer all of your questions.
The exhibition is suitable for all ages and brings the visitor on a journey through the history of Lough Gur starting during the Mesolithic Era, and progressing until the 19th century.
The launch of the Lough Gur interactive online tour not only marked the launch of the Lough Gur tours but also marked the beginning of deeper relationships between Lough Gur and the OPW.
