After a two-year hiatus, the Lough Gur Summer Solstice Celebrations are back with a bang for 2022 on Tuesday, June 21.

With beautiful scenery and stunning landscapes, Lough Gur is a picturesque location situated twenty minutes from Limerick City.

There will be a lot happening at the Summer Solstice – The Summer Solstice Sunrise Cycle Challenge, kayaking at the lakefront and Long Walk for a Long Day.

Everyone is invited to take their pick from events including the Lough Gur Summer Solstice Sunrise Cycle, the always popular Long Walk on a Long Day ending with Evening Solstice Kayaking on Lough Gur.

The Sunrise Cycle will raise funds for the Irish Red Cross. The Irish Red Cross deliver humanitarian assistance both at home and abroad. Irish Red Cross is a leading humanitarian charity in Ireland and overseas.

Departing from the lakefront at 5.30am the Sunrise Cycle is a perfect start to the longest day of the year. The cycle will follow a 30km route from Lough Gur to surrounding areas, returning to the Lough Gur Lakeshore Park Kiosk by 7.15am for freshly brewed coffee and cake for calories to help you on your way.

Five individuals from Lough Gur will not end their efforts here. They will take on the first-ever Lough Gur Summer Solstice Challenge by continuing to complete a two-hour kayaking session on the lake ending with a three-hour trek with up to 120 Long Walk on a Long Day trailblazers.

This new event was formally launched by Munster Rugby player Ben Healy, earlier this year. Ben commended the challengers by saying, “the Lough Gur Summer Solstice Challenge promotes health and fitness in the area and is to be commended. The Lough Gur Solstice Challengers’ work to raise funds for the Irish Red Cross is another reason to support the event this year.”
