Third year students studying Photography and Lens Based Media in Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD), are hosting an exhibition in Sailor’s Home O’Curry Street, from February 17 to February 21. Their opening night is Tuesday February 17, from 7pm-9pm, and then from Wednesday 18 to Saturday 21, the exhibition is open at 10am-5pm.

This is the first exhibition of the Photography and Lens Based Media discipline, which is the reason for the titling of the exhibition; ‘Primitus’ means first in Latin.

The course began in September 2013, with students coming from LSAD’s first year course and direct entry. The students learn about all kinds of camera techniques and skills, from darkroom development and analog cameras –  35mm, medium format and large format cameras. The students also have a large knowledge of digital camera, lens, studio work and video cameras. Some of their work is not necessarily made with a lens, but some students play outside of the photography field, using scanners and pin hole photography, and simply cutting and sewing into image (creating new pieces of work). The course is aimed at changing the educational needs of students studying fine art, as technology is rapidly growing.

The course leader of Photography and Lens Based Based is Martin Healy, a Dublin-based photography, film and video artist. Last year, Irish artist Sean Lynch was with the students, who is now representing Ireland in the 56th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di VeneziaThe digital art lecturer, Alan Butler, currently has an exhibition in Ormstom house, and lecturer Peter Morgan teaches them photography, video, text, collage, and 3-D objects.

17 students are participating in the exhibition, including an Erasmus student from France. A former student of LSAD, Alan Crowley, is currently involved in curating the exhibition.

Each of the students will be bringing their own unique and individual approaches, ranging from digital photography, primitive photography, film, sculpture and mixed media, analog and pin hole photography, to sculptures, video pieces and installations.

They have many sponsors, from LIT, and The Red Hen, who is throwing the after party on Tuesday. The Strand Hotel and Sam Hire are two more sponsors, who have been a fantastic help to the students’ running of the exhibition. Shannon Foynes Port Company is renting them out the building.

The After Party will be held in The Red Hen Bar, Limerick on Tuesday night, and everyone is invited!
