The Limerick sporting community and beyond is in mourning as tributes pour in for the much-loved Luke Grimes following the sad news of his passing

Tributes have been paid to Luke Grimes, a ‘great friend and loyal supporter’, following the sad news of the passing of the much-loved and well-known 23-year-old, who passed away on Wednesday, September 24. He is remembered for his “bravery, love of sport and GAA, laughter, and joy for life”.
A passionate Manchester United fan, locally, Luke’s love for the game was felt strongly at Pike Rovers, where he was not just a supporter of the club but was a player and went on to be a manager for the club.
In a tribute to Luke, Pike Rovers said, “It was with great sadness we learned of the passing of young Luke Grimes on Wednesday evening. Everyone associated with Pike Rovers and the Limerick Soccer Community had come to know and love Luke and his infectious personality and quick wit. He had been A Player, A manager, and above all, an incredible supporter of Pike Rovers.
“All in Pike Rovers and the broader Limerick Soccer family will miss him. Condolences from All in Pike Rovers to the Grimes Family and to All his close friends at this incredibly tough time. May He Rest in Peace.”
Luke’s passion for sport also extended to the GAA, where he showed his passion for the game through his local club, St Patrick’s GAA, who described the young Limerick man as having an “infectious smile, humour and positive energy” which “shone so brightly”.

In a post on Social Media, St Patrick’s GAA said, “We are deeply saddened and devastated to learn of the passing of our great friend and loyal supporter, Luke Grimes, this evening. Following our draw against neighbours Claughaun, the joy and energy of sport were truly and heartbreakingly put into perspective as the news of Luke’s passing reached us.
“Luke was a passionate supporter of St. Patrick’s GAA. He followed the Mullins boys in particular with great pride and enthusiasm, always bringing joy and spirit to the sidelines. In recent times, he especially enjoyed cheering on his nephew, Harry, with that same infectious pride. Despite facing health challenges throughout his life, Luke taught us all how to embrace each moment and make the most of what we have.
“His bravery, love of sport and GAA, laughter, and joy for life will be fondly remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. The infectious smile, humour and positive energy that Luke shone so brightly. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Luke’s family, friends, and all who held him so dear. Fly high Luke you will be so fondly remembered, never forgotten and thank you for the joy you brought to so so many.”
