‘I am delighted. It’s been a challenging two years, but it was worth it,’ said Jesslynn Campion, as she celebrated achieving a 100% Distinction in the LYS Leaving Cert Applied exams.

Jesslynn left secondary school in 3rd Year as she felt the ‘mainstream school’ was not for her.

However, she returned to education where she completed her Junior Certificate with Youthreach and then passed her Leaving Cert Applied with flying colours with LYS.

‘I really liked my time with LYS, particularly the small class sizes and the people- my classmates and the teachers, who were very supportive,’ said Jesslynn who said coming to LYS was ‘the best decision I ever made.’

‘A year or two ago I didn’t think I’d be able to do something like this, but to have gotten it (Leaving Cert Applied) and about to start my multi-media course in LCFE next week, I am delighted,’ said a proud Jesslynn,

Laya Moloney, Clarina, was another learner who was delighted with her results and is preparing to study Equine Studies at Croom College of Further Education.

Laya was full of praise for the staff at LYS Community Training Centre and thanked the teachers and instructors for their support and help saying ‘I loved my time here.  The staff were really supportive and if you were struggling with stuff, they’d help you.’

One of the features of the Leaving Cert Applied is the balance between academic and practical modules and the continuous assessment, that suits some young people.

‘A lot of people feel who sit the Leaving Cert feel under pressure with the main exams at the end of the year, whereas this (LCA) there is a continuous assessment and not all rests on a final exam, which I think is fairer,’ said Charlotte O’Halloran, Rhebogue.

Charlotte, who was delighted with her results, will continue her studies at the College of Further Education & Training Mulgrave St Campus (LCFE), where she will study engineering.

Leaving Certificate Applied Coordinator Noreen Murphy was delighted with the results saying, ‘they reflect the commitment and effort of the young people and they should be very proud of their achievements.’

‘It was a challenging two years for them, particularly during periods of lockdown however, they showed great resilience and commitment and have been rewarded with top marks,’ said Noreen.

‘We would like to thank the learners for their support, patience and understanding, particularly during the periods of lockdown and remote learning,’ said Noreen who wished the Class of 2022 the very best in the future.

The class of LYS Leaving Cert Applied class of 2022 will now progress to further education and/or employment and LYS wishes them the very best of luck with their future endeavours.

The Leaving Cert Applied is a two-year course that meets the needs of students who prefer the practical and continuous assessment approach in contrast to that of the ‘mainstream’ Leaving Cert.

It is continually assessed with a strong emphasis on recognising the talents of all students, giving opportunities through the subjects and modules to develop personal responsibility and self-esteem.

The LCA is delivered at LYS’ Community Training Centre, Lr. Glentworth St, Limerick with the support of the Limerick & Clare Education & Training Board.

A member of Youth Work Ireland and the Irish Association of Community Training Centres, LYS remains committed to connecting with young people and supporting them to reach their full potential.
