Limerick City’s urban renewal has taken a step forward with the signing of the contracts with the Integrated Design Team for the Market Quarter and Cruises Street Public Realm Project.
This milestone marks “a significant milestone in progressing this key infrastructure project for the city centre”, aimed at creating vibrant, accessible, and sustainable public spaces.
The appointed design team, Egis Engineering Ireland Ltd., will lead the design and development of high-quality streetscapes and public areas that celebrate Limerick’s unique character and heritage while supporting economic growth and community engagement.
The project aims to focus on improving the pedestrian experience, integrating green infrastructure, and fostering a welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
The proposed project is being delivered by Limerick City and County Council’s Place Making Department and is being funded by the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF) as well as the National Transport Authority (NTA), underlining the projects importance as part of Limerick’s long-term vision for the city centre.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, says the vision for the Market Quarter and Cruises Street will “reshape the heart” of Limerick City Centre.

He said, “It is another piece in the jigsaw we are continuing to put together in redeveloping city centre, namely the vision for Arthur’s Quay Park and surrounding areas, along with the recent completion of One Opera Square. Limerick now has momentum and is delivering, turning our plans into action.”
Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Kieran O’Donnell TD, said the signing of contracts for the project is a “significant milestone in progressing this key infrastructure project for the city centre”.
He said, “My Department is supporting these works through funding from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) as part of the wider ‘Living Limerick City Centre Initiative’, which also includes the development of a new Food Hub at the historic Milk Market. I look forward to seeing the completed design and commencement of works on this high-quality public realm project, which will greatly enhance connectivity throughout the city centre here in Limerick.”
Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery, commented, “The signing of this contract marks a major step forward in transforming the Market Quarter and Cruises Street into a vibrant and welcoming space. This project will enhance the heart of Limerick City, creating a public realm that reflects our city’s ambition and energy.”

Limerick City and County Council’s Director General, Dr Pat Daly, commented, “We are delighted to partner with an experienced Integrated Design Team to deliver this significant project. Their expertise will ensure that the design reflects both the heritage and future aspirations for a more Prosperous and Liveable Limerick, for residents, businesses and visitors alike.”
Andrew Doyle, Director at Egis Engineering Ireland, said, “At Egis, we take great pride in applying our local insight and global expertise to deliver high-quality placemaking solutions, and we are delighted to support Limerick City and County Council in realising its ambitious vision for the Market Quarter and Cruises Street. Egis is proud to play a central role in the design of this landmark project, and we look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the Council through detailed design and into construction.”
The Market Quarter and Cruises Street Public Realm Project is part of Limerick’s broader strategy to revitalise its urban core, strengthen its cultural identity, and promote a thriving city centre.
