Mary Immaculate College Science Week 2015 November 8-15

Mary Immaculate College Science Week 2015 will take place from November 8 to 15 inclusive.

‘Science Week 2.0’ at Mary Immaculate College with free events for the family to enjoy together. Everyone is welcome, booking is essential.

As part of Science Week 2015 Mary Immaculate College will join forces with the University of Limerick and Limerick Institute of Technology to present a range of activities and experiences celebrating the role of science in the lives of people in the Mid-West region.

The three third level institutions in Limerick City will share their enthusiasm of science, engineering, technology and mathematics with everyone in the region – primary, secondary and college students, parents, teachers and anybody who wants to find out more about science in our everyday lives.

According to Dr. Maeve Liston, Director of Enterprise and Community Engagement at MIC and one of the festival organisers, Science Week brings everyone together from children and adults, to scientists, engineers and technologists and is designed to spark curiosity, inspire imagination and unleash the potential that can help shape the future.

Speaking in advance of the festival Dr. Liston said: “The festival aims to challenge stereotypes so young people can see the diversity of people that work in STEM. This year’s festival features a range of scientists and engineers from various backgrounds, ages, and disciplines. A variety of interactive talks, workshops, quizzes, cafe science and fun activities will take place across the week of the Festival”.

Science Show: Fantastic Physics

Date: Saturday 14th November 2015

Location: T118, The Tara Building, Mary Immaculate College

Details: Can you use physics to lift and adjust, make magnets hover, blow up a bin bag using just one breath, prove there is energy in food, make a teabag fly or use mentos sweets to cause a geyser? Learn all about these ‘tricks’ and the science behind them.

Age Group: Suitable for All

Three shows repeated on the day: 10.30 am, 12.00pm & 2.00pm

Bright Sparks Science Workshop

Preliminary Date: Sunday 15th November

Location: T314, The Tara Building, Mary Immaculate College.

Details: This workshop will allow participants to explore ‘can a potato tell us the time?’’, ‘can we get light from a lemon?/’, ‘can we play music with a banana?’ etc. They will also learn about current electricity, by making a variety of simple circuits with bulbs and motors which they can take away to continue their investigations at home.

Age Group: 3rd class – 6th class pupils

Three workshops repeated on the day: 11am- 12:30pm, 1pm – 2:30pm & 3.00pm – 4:30 pm
