Launch of the Mary Immaculate College Studio Classroom Art Exhibition

The Studio Classroom Art exhibition was launched recently at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) by Dr Angela Canny, Acting Dean of Education at MIC. The extraordinary event for children’s artwork has been the result of a creative collaboration taking place over the months of May and June 2018, between the teachers and students of three local primary schools and three artists based in MIC.

The children participating in this event are from three national schools, Our Lady Queen of Peace NS, Janesboro; St. Michael’s Infant School, Sexton Street and Thomond Primary School, Ballynanty.

The exhibition, which was launched at Mary Immaculate College on Thursday 29 November, is based on an initiative by Anne Marie Morrin, Lecturer Visual Art Education, Department of Arts Education and Physical Education (MIC) and the Transforming Education through Dialogue (TED) project (MIC). 

Participating in this event were the three visual artists Julie Brazil, Mary Conroy and Sheila Richardson along with the three primary teachers from each participating school. Dearbhla Casey from Our Lady Queen of Peace, Ciara Ryan from St. Michael’s Infant School and Lorraine O’ Donnell from Thomond Primary School. Together, these artists and teachers collaborated with the children to become better at art through a blended approach involving online communication and onsite art lessons in the classroom. The exhibition hopes to promote innovative ways for artists, teachers and pupils to engage in new art practices.  

The artworks in the exhibition include drawings, painting, ceramics, mapping and mixed media, and will continue to be put on public view in the Art Room in MIC until January 18.  

The initiative also seeks to develop a Studio Habits framework that focuses on the pedagogical approaches that are traditionally found in the methods of an artist’s studio and how these can be utilized to promote innovative ways that primary schools can engage, respond and challenge contemporary issues within our society.
