Limerick-based artists Carey Long and Shannan Curtis have curated an other-worldly, fully immersive experience at Spacecraft Studios Project Place that will take place from May 1-4 from 7 to 9pm.
Carey and Shannon are both artists who graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design.
Carey works with sculpture and since graduating in 2018 creates botanical sculptures from Spacecraft Studios. Shannon works with textile work, specialising in rugs and selling them at the Wickham Way market. Together, they have united to share a vision of what art can become.
Alongside their work, 45 local artists across all disciplines will also be featured at the exhibition bringing maximalism, creatures, flowers, nature, and bright colours to the stage.
They organised this exhibition to showcase local artists’ work in an untraditional way. They will be displaying each artist’s work in an immersive, sensory overload experience.
While curating the exhibition, Carey and Shannan played off ideals of challenging a traditional approach to showcasing the artists, which led them to come up with the idea of a unique sensory atmosphere.
Each of the artist’s works will feed into the overall experience of the installation, with works all over the room – on the floor, ceiling, walls and hanging from everywhere and anywhere.
Each work will be displayed at the Limerick Artists Studios and Project Space ‘Spacecraft’, which is located across from the Limerick Milk Market. Spacecraft is an artist-run, non-profit studio and project space aiming to create affordable studio space for emerging artists.
The space opened in 2021 and has since housed 39th EVA international Phase 2 and 3 and was the venue for the performance artist Courtney Sharos’ recent solo show.
The opening Maximalism Exhibition reception will take place on May 1 at 7pm. Music and sounds will be performed on the opening night by singer-songwriter Brid Kenney.
“If you are looking to jump into the deep end of the weirdness of art, this exhibition is for you!”, said host artists Carey Long and Shannan Curtis.
