Mayor of Limerick city and county congratulates Limerick Olympians on Team Ireland

The Mayor of the city and county of Limerick, Cllr Daniel Butler, has extended his best wishes and excitement to the Limerick athletes who have been selected to represent Team Ireland at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The incredible Limerick stars who have been selected to represent Ireland in this year’s Tokyo Olympic Games 2021, include Sarah Lavin, Róisín Upton, Carolyn Hayes and Greg O’Shea.
Speaking after at an announcement, the Mayor commented, “Sarah, Greg, Róisín and Carolyn are superb ambassadors for their communities, their clubs, Limerick and Ireland.”

Sarah Lavin, Lisnagry will compete in the women’s 100m hurdles, Greg O’Shea, Corbally, will compete as a member of the Ireland Rugby Sevens team. Not only this, but 2021 will mark being just the second year that Rugby Sevens has been recognised as a Limerick sport, making the event all the more special for the Limerick Rugby player.
Róisín Upton, Raheen, has been selected on the Irish Women’s Hockey Team and Carolyn Hayes, Newcastle West, will compete in the individual women’s triathlon event. Carolyn said “It is incredible to be announced as a Team Ireland member for Tokyo. The whole journey has been a rollercoaster, emotionally and physically.”
In a poignant speech, the Mayor said, “We are all so proud of you, our local Olympian. Your years of training and dedication is now being rewarded and I know you will inspire the next generation of athletes in Limerick to fulfill their dreams of taking part in sport at the highest level. I want to wish you all the very best of luck at the Games in Tokyo, we will all be cheering you on at home in Limerick. We will all be thinking of you as you make final preparations over the next few weeks and safe travels to Tokyo.”
The Mayor added that he looks forward to honouring the achievements of Sarah, Greg, Róisín and Carolyn at a later date.
