Two Limerick students are calling on their local community for support as they prepare for a volunteering trip to Ghana. In rural Ghana, many communities lack access to proper childcare.

As volunteers, Melissa Do and Aoife Keogh will be working in local schools alongside teachers, helping young children learn, play, and grow in a safe, supportive environment.

Their role will include everything from homework help and games to sharing their culture and assisting with meals. They also hope to buy essential supplies like books, pencils, first aid items locally to support the community even further.

Melissa and Aoife are currently fundraising for the initiative and are inviting people to take part in a table quiz on Friday April 10th at Garryowen Rugby Club. Doors open at 7:30pm, with the quiz kicking off at 8:00pm.

A raffle will also be held on the night, and the pair are appealing to local businesses to donate prizes. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated as they work towards their goal.

The raffle will be a key part of the fundraiser, with tickets available both in advance and on the night of the quiz. Anyone who wants to enter early can buy tickets through Revolut.

Melissa Do said, “We’re so grateful for the support we’ve received from our friends, family, and the wider community.”

To purchase, supporters should send a Revolut payment along with their name, phone number, and how many raffle strips they’d like. Tickets cost €5 for one strip or €10 for three, offering more chances to win while supporting the fundraiser

Entry is €10 per person or €40 for a table of four, with the organisers hoping to create a fun and welcoming night for friends, families, and the wider community. Free snacks will be available, and the bar will be open throughout the evening to purchase drinks.

Speaking about the initiative, Melissa said they have been amazed by the encouragement they’ve received so far, saying, “We’re so grateful for the support we’ve received from our friends, family, and the wider community. This trip means so much to us, and we’re really excited about the opportunity to go to Ghana and help out in a local school. Every bit of support helps bring us one step closer to making it a reality.”

Aoife added that the quiz is intended to be both fun and meaningful, adding, “We wanted to organise an event that people could enjoy while also helping us raise funds. A table quiz is a great way to bring people together, and the raffle will add to the excitement on the night.”

Melissa and Aoife are encouraging people throughout Limerick to attend the quiz, buy raffle tickets, or help spread the word about their fundraiser. The project is organised by IVHQ (International Volunteering Headquarters) to ensure the volunteers give the maximum back to the community.
