A member of Made In Limerick, Metal and Mallet founded by Nikki and her husband Donnacha, combines sustainability, local materials, and artistic passion to create unique house decór.

“Metal and Mallet is a concept of having a unique piece in your home. They’re all hand-carved lamps, ceiling lights, mirrors.

“We incorporate sustainably sourced wood, metal, and copper. So each piece is unique, and it’s unique to the customer.”

Nikki told I Love Limerick, adding, “It’s like a painting, we always say, it’s a conversation piece. And that’s what everyone wants, a one-off. That’s what they are.”

One standout piece incorporates bog oak, a rare and ancient wood thousands of years old, Nikki explains how the piece is inspired by Munster Rugby, “That’s the Munster Rugby stag. All hand-carved bog oak the whole way around. Donnacha loves 1960s architecture, he’s the artist.”

Even the LED bulbs, with a lifespan of 20,000 hours, are chosen with sustainability in mind and Nikki explains Donnacha’s process eschews large workshop machinery in favour of hand tools, allowing the wood to guide each design, she said, “The wood speaks to him, so he doesn’t like to transform it.”

“It’s amazing the amount of people that come, and they touch it, and they smell it, because wood is a living being, and it speaks to you, and that’s why people love the pieces,” Nikki said.

Metal and Mallet’s can be found at the Milk Market in Limerick and Made in Limerick on Henry Street and for those outside the area, their Instagram page and website offer a glimpse into their artistry.
