Mary Immaculate College Invites Applications for Three MIC Artist in Residencies

Mary Immaculate College (MIC) is currently inviting applications for three separate artist-in-residency programmes; a Theatre-Maker/ Playwright residency; an Irish Traditional Musician residency and a Contemporary Drawing Practice residency.

The residencies will be located within the context of the College’s focus on Initial Teacher Education (primary teaching) and are made possible by the Arts Council, in partnership with Mary Immaculate College (MIC) and the Lime Tree Theatre.

Proposals for the Theatre-Maker/ Playwright residency are invited from professional artists with a track record in theatre-making/ playwriting with at least one play/theatre piece staged professionally; proposals for the Irish Traditional Musician residency are invited from  professional artists with a track record in traditional music who have demonstrated an interest in creating work with or for children; and proposals for the Contemporary Drawing Practice residency are invited from artists who use drawing in the context of a wide range of media for example film, animation, performance, sculpture and in a traditional manner.

The Artist-in-Residence programmes are funded by the Arts Council as part of the Council’s commitment to the provision of artists in residence in all colleges of education; a commitment outlined in the Arts in Education Charter (2012). Speaking on the announcement Seóna Ní Bhriain, Head of Young People, Children and Education with the Arts Council, said: “The Arts Council is delighted to support three new residencies at Mary Immaculate College. These form part of a series of partnerships with higher education institutes providing initial teacher education. The residencies aim to provide future teachers with opportunities to engage meaningfully with the arts as part of their initial teacher education and to support them to develop the skills and confidence to facilitate meaningful arts experiences for their students and to champion the arts in schools. The residencies also provide an opportunity for artists to develop their skills and experience in education settings, and to develop their artistic work in a collaborative and supportive environment”.

Mary Immaculate College has a strong historical track-record of residences; having hosted Branar, Téatar does Pháistí, from 2013-2016 and multi-award winning composer, Anne-Marie O’Farrell from 2014-2017.  Feedback from both residences showed the impact of the residencies extended beyond their initial remit; rather both residencies had a far-reaching influence on the wider community and beyond.

Welcomed the announcement Professor Teresa O’Doherty, Dean of Education, MIC said “We are once again delighted, through the continued support of the Arts Council, to offer these three residencies.  These residencies will not only benefit the student by enabling them to engage with a professional artist in the area of drama, music and visual art, but they will also allow the practising artists to feed into the educational programmes and work of the institution, enlivening the culture of the MIC campus and beyond”.

While Louise Donlon, Director of the Lime Tree Theatre said:  “The Lime Tree Theatre very much welcomes these residencies as collaborations with the Artist-in-Residents allows us to present high-quality work that is specifically designed for and targeted at children, which is a special focus of our programme”.

The three separate residencies are for the period 1 September 2017 – 30 June 2018 and will be will be hosted by MIC’s Department of Arts Education and Physical Education.

The successful applicant will be paid a fee of €15,000 for the year. Applicants may express an interest in continuing the residency for up to a maximum of three academic years.

The deadline for receipt of expressions of interest is Friday 2 June 2017.
