At a time when education programmes are experiencing a drop in points nationally MIC is bucking the trend with all but one of their teaching programmes experiencing an increase in points.

There has been an exceptional demand for places on the B Ed programme with a 17% increase in First Preferences, the highest figures obtained since 2009. The programme has witnessed a marginal increase in points from 465 to 466 – an increase of one point.

The B Ed (Education and Psychology), a highly sought-after programme and the only one of its type in Ireland that attracts applicants from across the country, has seen a rise of 7 points to 552. This programme remains the teacher education programme with the highest points in the country.

The enhanced Bachelor of Arts has seen an increase of 7% in total MIC CAO applications and as a result are, with the exception of 2015, the highest they have been since the programme commenced over 25 years ago. Points for this programme stand at 336 up by six points.

The BA in Contemporary and Applied Theatre Studies continues to establish itself, gaining considerable traction with a 33% increase in applications. Points for this programme are up 36 points to 316.

The BA in Early Childhood Care and Education still attracts a considerable number of applicants with points at 367.

The four second-level teaching programmes at MIC, St. Patrick’s Campus, Thurles, continue to perform well with a 6% collective increase in First Preferences and a further 19% increase in total applications.  Points for these programmes stand at:

– BA in Education, Business and Accounting: 356 an increase of 16 points.

– BA in Education, Business and Religious Studies: 319 a decrease of 6 points

– BA in Education, Irish and Religious Studies: 382 an increase of 7 points

– BA in Education, Irish and Business Studies: 377 an increase of 17 points

Speaking on the overall increases for MIC’s nine undergraduate programmes Professor Eugene Wall, President of Mary Immaculate College (Acting), said: “We are very pleased that a growing number of students have selected Mary Immaculate College as their first college of choice.”

He continued: “This attests to the quality of MIC’s programme provision and reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The increased application figures can, in no small part, also be attributed to the significant scholarship programme valued at €100,000 introduced in 2017.”
