Justice Catherine McGuiness thanks the People of Limerick
In a letter to Milford Care Centre, Judge Catherine McGuiness, Chairperson of the National Forum on End of Life thanked the people of Limerick for their contribution to the art project launched at the Forum on End of Life in Dublin Castle recently.
Many individuals from Limerick, through Milford Care Centre, contributed to the project and paid tribute to someone significant in their life by decorating a small rectangle of hessian cloth with the initials to reflect this person, paying tribute to that someone significant to them. These pieces of art were beautifully created by people attending Milford’s Day Care Services and also by members of the community engaged in Milford’s Compassionate Communities project.
Art teacher, Aideen Gough used these tribute pieces to create a beautiful and unique collective art piece symbolising the power of working collectively. Justice McGuiness said “We are very grateful for everyone’s participation and hope that they found the experience meaningful.”
There was a great response to the project from the public and from the participants at the Forum in Dublin Castle in October last. All of the individual artwork was displayed on television screens throughout the day. A large collectiom of artwork was unveiled on the day which incorporated most of the contributions.
The Forum is currently preparing all of the artwork for display in a number of box sets which will protect them and exhibit them to best effect. The completed box sets will be put on display in the offices of the Irish Hospice Foundation in Dublin. This work will take a few months to complete. When the work is finished, contributors will be most welcome to visit the offices in Nassau Street, Dublin 2 to view the exhibits.
Aideen Gough, who prepared the final collective artwork. will be writing about the project for her Master’s Degree in Visual Arts Education in the National College of Art and Design and may, with permission from the creators, include pictures of some of the individual pieces of artwork to illustrate her thesis.
Milford Care Centre engaged in the creativity as part of their ongoing Compassionate Communities Project, which seeks to empower communities to enrich and support society to live compassionately with death, dying, loss and care.
Milford is set to launch the next phase of that project across the Mid-West, and it will include the development of a volunteer led model of practical support for people facing the end of life, who are living in their own homes. If you would like to get involved in any way or find out more about the Compassionate Communities Project, please do contact Dr Kathleen McLoughlin 061 201 769 or email [email protected]
