TD Kieran O'Donnell is saying the new school should be ready by 2024

TD Kieran O’Donnell is saying the new school should be ready by 2024

Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board have confirmed that by the end of this month, they will be applying for and submitting a detailed planning application to Limerick City and County Council for a new state-of-art 34 classroom school building at Monaleen National School.

This is much awaited after stalled development left pupils stuck in prefabs. MCOH Architects are the appointed design team for the new school building project. Local TD Kieran O’Donnell said, “the next steps are for the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board to bring the school building through the planning permission, tender and construction stages. It is planned for the new school building to be opened for teaching staff and pupils by 2024”.

This follows a successful Stage 2a meeting that took place on April, 1 with the Department of Education, which has approved the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board to proceed under Stage 2b to apply for planning permission to Limerick City and County Council.

TD Kieran O’Donnell said local families and the existing local authorities were, “frustrated at the time it has taken to kickstart the lengthy process of planning a new school to meet growth in the local population. However, we now have a defined structured process underway with Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board which will ensure this much needed new school building project can be built as quickly as possible.”

Monaleen National School is a co-educational Catholic primary school on the outskirts of Limerick City and has close to 900 pupils. It is the largest in the county, and a significant portion of the school is made up of prefabs.

“The new school building project is a 2-storey new school building of 34 Classrooms, with 32 mainstream and 2 SEN classrooms respectively. It will be located on the existing 4-acre site and will be built as one unit,” said TD Kieran O’Donnell.

“The new school building for Monaleen NS is a major capital investment project being managed by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board on behalf of the Department of Education. I am pleased to confirm that a planning application will be submitted by the end of this month,” said George O’Callaghan, the Chief Executive of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board.
