Limerick couple travel to Mongolia in Micra for charity
By I Love Limerick correspondent Caoimhe Siochru.
Limerick couple Laura and Craig will be taking on the Mongol Rally later this year and have set up a fundraiser on Go Fund me to raise money for three charities that are important to them.
The couple, along with two other teammates will be travelling 10,000 miles to Mongolia in a 1999 Micra, with no route, no help and a barely working car. The funds raised will go towards the Irish Cancer Society, Cool Earth and the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre. The couple will fund their trip all by themselves!
The couple spoke about coming across the crazy adventure of the Mongol Rally saying, “At the time of finding out about the rally, we were a team of two. We decided that misery loves company, so we put out a call on Facebook to see if anyone wanted to join us. After a very serious Discord call, telling our new potential teammates all the possible dangers and ways we could die on the Mongol Rally, they were crazy enough to say yes.”
After many attempts of trying to find a cheap car that could safely bring them on their adventures, they found the perfect car by a happy accident. The couple said, “It was love at first sight. We drove to Portlaoise to pick her up, and from then on, Mercedes, the trusty 1999 1L Nissan Micra, was our Mongolian steed.” Their Micra will take them through some of the most remote and wild roads to bring them to Europe and Southwest/Central Asia.
All donations will aid their choses charities and those who benefit from them. The Irish Cancer Society are a community of patients, survivors, volunteers, supporters, health and social care professionals and researchers who are transforming the experiences and outcomes of people affected by cancer by their tremendous work and support. Cool Earth is the official charity of the Mongol Rally. Their aim is to protect the rainforest to tackle the climate crisis by listening and supporting the community there. The last charity is the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, an organisation that supports and provides free, professional counselling to survivors of all forms of sexual assault.
