Limerick Dragons receive a cheque for more than €1,000 following a Mother Macs New Year’s Eve fundraiser

Limerick Dragons have extended their extreme gratitude to Mother Macs Public House who presented the group with a cheque worth €1,015 following a successful New Year’s Eve fundraising event.
The funds were raised during a lively night of celebrations at the city-centre pub, with customers generously supporting the cause as they rang in the New Year. The initiative highlighted the strong community spirit in Limerick, with patrons, staff and supporters coming together to support Limerick Dragons.
Representatives from the Limerick Dragons were on hand to accept the cheque and expressed their sincere gratitude to Mother Mac’s and everyone who contributed. The funds will go towards supporting the club’s training, equipment and upcoming competitions in the year ahead.
Limerick Dragons is a breast cancer survivors group set up in 2016, with supporters and family members involved in the club fundraising in 2017 to purchase their first dragon boat. They paddle on the River Shannon and launch the boat on the slipway on O’Callaghan Strand.
Some days if you are driving along the road near Cleeves Carpark you will see them taking the boat down to the water to launch. They are quite the sight when moving the 40-foot dragon boat with up to 22 paddlers to the Shannon.
Dragon boat paddling is recognised worldwide as an extremely helpful sport post-surgery and treatment in helping lymphoma, which is a common side effect of breast cancer treatment. There are currently about 3,600 new cases diagnosed annually. The rates have increased again to 1 in 7 women and 1 in 728 in men.
