MOTHERLAND Songs of 20th Century Women comes to Belltable, Thursday, April 21
Motherland features songs of struggle and celebrations, performed by Edel Murphy (Celtic Woman, Riverdance) and a live band. Featuring evocative projected images alongside thought-provoking spoken word, Murphy performs iconic songs of struggle and celebration from songwriting greats such as Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Kate Bush, Nanci Griffith, Dolly Parton, and The Beatles. Following extensive tours with Grammy winning shows Celtic Woman and Riverdance, Edel Murphy – singer, actor and musician – and live band bring you through the Dustbowl of the Great Depression, into the homes of 1950s urban desperation, down streets of protest in the 1960s and into the tumult of the 21st Century.
Edel trained as an actor and holds a BA in Drama performance from DIT. She has extensive musical experience and has been performing for many years both in choirs and as a featured soloist with credits such as ‘The Manchester Carols’ (All Hallows) and ‘Arise my Love’ (Celtic Mass). She plays many instruments including piano, guitar and ukulele. In 2015 she released her first EP, Bluebonnet Spring, with musician and producer Ewan Cowley which has enjoyed both UK and Irish radio play (BBC, RTE). Edel and Ewan also duet on the 2017 single, ‘Emily’.
Since 2014 Edel has starred as Soprano Soloist with the world renowned ‘Riverdance’ at The Gaiety Theatre. A highlight of her time with the show was performing on The Apollo stage in London as part of the 20th anniversary tour.
“An amazing show…Edel Murphy was stunning, the sharpness of her delivery was outstanding. The songs are acerbic and to the point and the backdrop of visuals was very powerful. I was blown away by it”. Dick O’Riordan, Business Post
“A poignant and socially relevant journey over a century of music. Edel Murphy owns these songs and the stage. It was a very moving experience and the musical arrangements are masterful.” Carl Corcoran, RTÉ Lyric FM
