Limerick lads Aaron Hackett, Iain Campbell, Robert Bourke, Conor Duignan, Caolan Parrott, and Darragh O’Flanagan are taking part in the charity event Movember 2021. Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale. The charity raises funds to deliver innovative, breakthrough research and support programs that enable men to live happier, healthier and longer lives.

“Because we’re all from Limerick, we tried to come up with a good name for our team. Darragh came up with “Angela’s Stache’s”, which was brilliant,” Aaron said.

“We’re all from different parts of Limerick, and we’ve been friends for years. We mostly met through college, but some of us have known each other longer. When we came up with the idea to do the campaign together, some of us decided we would challenge ourselves to run 60km over the next few weeks, along with growing out our moustaches of course.”

Supporters are encouraged to either grow a moustache, move 60km in the month, host an event or take on an epic challenge. The organisation is appealing to all to get involved and support the health and wellbeing of the men in their lives. All funds go directly towards supporting men’s health projects across mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Millions have joined the movement, helping fund over 1,250 projects focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

The lads all felt passionate about the campaign, so decided to take part.

“I think men, in general, feel anxious to speak out about their mental health, even to their friends sometimes, so trying to bring some attention to this felt important especially coming out of a pandemic where a lot of young people feel a bit lost. A few of us went into the pandemic in the middle of our college lives, and are now working adults. Things are a bit confusing for people at the minute, so it’s important to be there for each other,” Aaron said.

This leading charity changing the face of men’s health is urging the people of Limerick to ‘Take Action’ by checking in on a mate; open up the conversation about mental health and check yourself. If something feels not right do talk to a healthcare professional. A new study by the charity revealed that nearly 60% of men never, or very rarely speak about their mental health.

“I think this time of the year, in general, can be tough enough for some people, so it’s a nice way to keep mental health awareness in people’s minds and on people’s feeds. Every year the campaign seems to gain new followers, and more donations, which is fantastic, and we’re all delighted to be a part of it this year,” Aaron said.

The organisation is strongly urging men, both young and old, to take ownership of their health, to act when they notice something is not right and to speak up and reach out when they are struggling.

Aaron said, “We raised over 700 euro in less than 24 hours, which we’re all very grateful for, as it’s going to an amazing cause. You can keep up to date with us on the official Movember website, where you can see each of our progress, and you can donate also!”

The Limerick lads will also be sharing their progress through their individual Instagram accounts.
