Iarnród Éireann‘s plans to construct a new rail station in the Moyross area of Limerick have progressed following the announcement that planning permission has been approved for the project.

Limerick City and County Council confirms that a decision has been made to grant planning permission for a train station in Moyross, noting that a final grant of planning will issue in the coming weeks.

The granting of planning permission for this crucial piece of infrastructure allows for the progression to the next stages of the project, which include detailed design, procurement, and further stakeholder engagement.

It is hoped the new station will provide improved connectivity for the area’s growing population between Moyross and Limerick City Centre as well as Dublin, Galway, Cork, and other routes in Ireland. The Moyross station will also integrate with Limerick City and County Council’s proposed University Avenue scheme, as well as the NTA’s BusConnects Limerick, and the proposed Limerick CycleConnects Network.

The new station is to be located at the rear of Corpus Christi Primary School and Moyross Community Enterprise Centre. This represents a transformative investment in sustainable transport and urban regeneration, linking the Northside of Limerick to key educational, civic, and employment hubs while supporting national goals for compact and connected growth.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, said the project will connect Moyross and areas such as Caherdavin, Thomondgate, and the northside to the rest of the city and beyond. He added, “It will unlock access to education, employment and social opportunities, all while benefitting business too. Moyross’ story continues to be written and I look forward to a new chapter being delivered.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Catherine Slattery, said the announcement was a “proud day for Moyross” and that securing permission for the project is a “major milestone” towards “greater inclusion and opportunity across Limerick”. She noted, “For decades, this community has called for better connectivity and we are now one step closer to delivering it. I want to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly to make this happen. Moyross deserves this investment, and I look forward to seeing the positive change it brings.”

The provision of a new rail station in Moyross is highlighted as one of the rail-based measures in the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy

Director General, Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly, concluded, “The approval of planning permission for the Moyross train station is a landmark achievement for Limerick and a powerful statement of intent for balanced regional development. This project is a cornerstone of our commitment to inclusive growth, ensuring that all communities are connected to opportunity. We are proud to support this transformative initiative and will keep working with all stakeholders to continue to deliver a transport network that reflects the ambition and potential of our city and county.”

Iarnród Éireann Chief Executive, Mary Considine stated, “The provision of a new station at Moyross is a key strategic development for the area. This station is a central provision of LSMATS  and aligns with our vision to deliver better rail connectivity for people in the Mid-West and make rail the backbone of Ireland’s sustainable transport network. This station will provide excellent connectivity for the existing community of Moyross and for future communities.”

Hugh Creegan, Acting CEO of NTA concluded, “We are delighted to support the approval of the new Moyross station. This marks a significant milestone in delivering sustainable mobility and enhanced connectivity for the community. By linking Moyross directly into the broader rail network, this station is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable future for the people of Limerick.”

The provision of a new rail station in Moyross is highlighted as one of the rail-based measures in the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (LSMATS) 2040 and was also listed as an objective in the Limerick Development Plan 2022 – 2028.

The new Moyross station will serve as a catalyst for regeneration of this area and will support the National Strategic objective of ‘Compact Growth’ as outlined in the National Development Plan 2021 – 2030.

The emerging preferred option for the location of Moyross station is to the rear of Corpus Christi Primary School and Moyross Community Enterprise Centre. Access to the station is proposed adjacent to both Corpus Christi Parish Church, and Moyross Health Centre.
