Limerick-based Mr Binman is driving sustainability forward by adding a 100 % electric truck to its fleet, reaffirming the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting a circular economy.

Speaking to I Love Limerick about the company’s electric truck, Sales & Marketing Director Joe Cleary said:

“This truck is 100% electric. It’s powered by renewable energy, which we put into the truck every evening. It completes a full round of collections and comes back then to be recharged overnight.”

Cleary noted that the Electric Vehicle contributes to the company’s sustainable fleet, which previously introduced biogas-powered trucks in 2024. He added:

“We have other trucks as well, which run on biogas. These run from food waste, which is being composted, and we extract the gas, and it’s put into the truck.”

“So, basically, yesterday’s waste is tomorrow’s energy. What we’re trying to transition to in our fleet is a mixture of fully 100 per cent electric and biogas, so that we’ll have a much more sustainable footprint and a lower carbon footprint collecting everybody’s waste.”

Cleary also explained an added benefit of the electric trucks is reduced noise during domestic collections:

“They’re almost silent as well — when you don’t have diesel engines it is much quieter, so for housing estates and things like that, it’s much better.”

Founded in Limerick and based on the Dock Road in Limerick, Mr Binman employs more than 140 people and is continuing to expand its operations. The company recently received an EPA licence for its eco-park, which processes waste locally and supports its circular-economy model.

Mr Binman’s mission for sustainability goes beyond technology: the company is a main sponsor of Team Limerick Clean‑Up and supports the local community through partnerships with Limerick GAA, Munster Rugby and the Limerick Christmas Racing Festival, among many other local initiatives.

Cleary concluded:

“It is very important to us personally as directors of the company to see that we’re giving back to the community in which we operate.”
