Mungret Pop-Up Museum held in St Paul’s GAA Community Centre is a success

Mungret Pop-Up Museum held in St Paul’s GAA Community Centre is a success

Limerick Museum in partnership with Mungret Heritage Society has held a highly successful Mungret Pop-Up Museum in St Paul’s GAA Community Centre. 

Everyone has heard of Pop-Up shops, Pop-up bars, cafes and restaurants but pop-up museums are now all the rage internationally.

A Pop-up Museum is a temporary display created by a museum working in partnership with the public, or perhaps a particular community (eg schools, aged care facilities or clubs). The purpose is to create conversations between people of all ages and walks of life. 

Limerick Museum and Mungret Heritage Society invited the community to join them and large numbers of people turned up and brought something on-topic to share for the Mungret Pop-Up Museum.

Dr Matthew Potter, Curator of Limerick Museum brought along a fascinating selection of Mungret-related objects from the Museum’s collection including wonderful old photographs of Muintir na Tíre Rural Week in Mungret College in 1949, a prospectus for flotation of Cement Ltd when it opened in 1938 and Stone Age artefacts discovered locally. 

Dr Potter said: “The Mungret Pop-Up Museum was a resounding success. The whole purpose of the Pop-Up Museum is to make this a community-centric event that empowers citizens to be active contributors to the museum space. The event was focused on bringing people together in conversation through stories, conversation and objects. Here, the museum is reinvented not only as an institutional or historical site but as spaces where the community can meet, interact and learn.” 

The Mungret Pop-Up Museum is one of a series of Pop-Up Museums being organised by Limerick Museum throughout 2019 and is funded by Creative Ireland through the Culture and Arts Department of Limerick City and County Council.
