A new campaign run by I Love Limerick asks Limerick consumers to look for local when shopping for products, services and experiences.

NeighbourFood is a grocery supplier in the Limerick Milk Market, where customers can shop for high quality and artisan foods from local producers.

The Limerick shop is part of a national network of NeighbourFood businesses that aim to bring the best produce to customers while also supporting local food producers.

Shoppers can choose to visit the Market on a Saturday or shop online for collection or home delivery.

On the NeighbourFood website, customers can shop from over fifty Munster-based suppliers.

“We have 51 suppliers at the moment and just over half of them are from Limerick,” NeighbourFood Milk Market host Deirdre McMahon tells I Love Limerick.

“Their products range from meat to milk, sauces, and condiments. They offer quite a wide range, which is what we need – a nice, wide range of quality food.”

Customers can shop online from 5 pm on Fridays until midnight on Tuesdays. They can choose to have their weekly order delivered to their homes, or they can collect it at the Milk Market between 6 pm and 7 pm on Thursday.

“You don’t even have to get out of your car, we will put the shopping in the boot for you!” explains Deirdre.

“For people with small kids or mobility issues, or if you are cautious about the pandemic, it’s a brilliant solution because it couldn’t be easier. You can shop local but in the easiest way possible.”

This high-quality supermarket alternative has been well received amongst market shoppers.

Limerick Milk Market manager David Fitzgerald tells I Love Limerick how NeighbourFood came to set up shop beneath the big top.

“We’ve looked at doing different versions of a home-delivery food service over the years, particularly to assist our elderly or those with disabilities. A Milk Market trader came to us and proposed the idea of NeighbourFood, so we asked Deirdre, who is a stakeholder in the national company, if she would be interested in hosting a shop in the Milk Market.”

“The pandemic pushed the opening back, but we eventually got going in March 2020 and the shop just took off. It’s going very well. I think NeighbourFood is a great addition to the Milk Market as it allows smaller producers that might not be able to trade here to sell through here.”

Deirdre feels that there is an unrivalled sense of community in the Milk Market.

“There’s really great support here. The traders and suppliers, they feel this is their home, they come here every Saturday and it’s just tradition at this stage,” she says.

Mayor of Limerick Daniel Butler says of the small business, “There is no greater advertisement for shopping local than NeighbourFood, which gives us access to quality, local produce very conveniently. Spend in your community and keep businesses and livelihoods going.”
